Tutorial - 3 Questions

The document is a tutorial for a Power Systems-I course at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, containing six questions related to the calculation of inductance, reactance, and capacitance for various three-phase transmission line configurations. Each question involves specific parameters such as conductor spacing, diameter, and arrangement, requiring calculations based on electrical engineering principles. The tutorial includes figures to illustrate the configurations discussed.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROORKEE

POWER SYSTEMS-I (EEC-208)

Second Year (Spring Semester, 2025-26)
TUTORIAL-3

Question-1: Fig 1 shows a twin-conductor circuit of a three-phase 50 Hz line with horizontal spacing of 6 m.
Each subconductor of the bundle has a diameter of 25 mm and spacing between the
subconductors is 0.3 m. Each phase group shares the total current and charge equally and the line
is completely transposed. Determine the line inductance per km and the line inductive reactance
per phase per km.
If the subconductors of each phase are replaced by single conductors, calculate the percentage
decrease in inductive reactance due to bundling. Assume that the area of cross-section of each
single conductor is equal to the total area of the two subconductors of a phase.

Question-2: Calculate the capacitance per phase of a three-phase three wire transposed system as shown
in Figure 2. when the conductors are arranged at the corners of a triangle with sides measuring
1.5 m, 2.0 m, and 2.5 m. Diameter of each conductor is 1.2 cm.

Question-3: A three-phase, three-wire 50 kV, 50 Hz overhead line conductor is placed in horizontal plane as
shown in Figure 3. The conductor diameter is 1.5 cm. If the length of the line is 100 km, calculate
(i) capacitance per phase per meter, (ii) charging current per phase.

Question-4: Calculate the capacitance per phase of a three-phase, double circuit line as shown in Figure 4.
The diameter of each conductor is 1.5 cm

Question-5: Calculate the capacitance per phase of a three-phase, three wire system by considering earth
effect, when the conductors are arranged in a horizontal plane with spacing 𝐷12 = 𝐷23 = 3.5 m ,
and 𝐷31 = 7 m as shown in the Fig. The conductors are transposed and each has a diameter of 2.0
cm. Assume that the transmission line is 4 m above the ground level.

Question-6: Find the capacitance per km to neutral and the capacitive reactance to neutral per km of the line
described in Figure 1.
