1. Introduction
Keyboarding skills are essential for efficient use of computers.
Help in fast and accurate typing.
Achieved through:
o Regular practice

2. Keyboarding Skills
Keyboard → Most common text input device.
Similar to typewriter keyboard but has extra keys.
Usually has 100+ keys.
Allows entering:
o Alphabets (A–Z)
o Numbers (0–9)
o Symbols & commands
Touch Typing Method
Typing without looking at the keyboard.
Relies on muscle memory.
Place fingers on Home Row and move only required fingers.
Advantages:
o Increases speed (60+ WPM possible)
o Improves accuracy
o Reduces fatigue
3. Types of Keys on a Keyboard
Type of Key Purpose / Function
Alphanumeric keys Alphabets (A–Z) + Numbers (0–9)
Punctuation keys Comma, period, brackets, semicolon, mathematical operators (+, –, =)
Alt key Used with other keys for alternate functions
Arrow keys Move cursor up, down, left, right
Shift key Used for uppercase letters & top symbols
Backspace key Deletes character to the left of cursor
Caps Lock key Toggle key → ON = uppercase, OFF = lowercase
Ctrl key Works with other keys for shortcuts
Delete key Deletes character at cursor without moving it
Enter / Return Executes commands or moves to new line
Esc key Exits from menus or cancels tasks
Function keys (F1–F12) Special functions, vary by software
4. Numeric Keypad
Located on right side of keyboard.
Used for fast numeric data entry.
Contains:
o Numbers 0–9
o Mathematical symbols (+, –, ×, ÷)
o Num Lock key → switches between number mode &
navigation mode.
Tip: Key 5 has a small raised dot → guide key.
5. Home Keys & Guide Keys
Type Keys Purpose
Home Keys ASDF (Left hand) & ;LKJ (Right hand) Resting position for fingers
Guide Keys F (Left) & J (Right) Have raised marks to position fingers correctly

Typing Text
Press letter keys normally.
Deleting Text
Backspace → Deletes left of cursor.
Delete → Deletes character at cursor.
Typing Numbers
Use numeric keypad OR top-row number keys.
Typing Capital Letters
Caps Lock ON → continuous uppercase.
Shift + Letter → single uppercase.
Typing Symbols
Shift + Key → for symbols printed on top of keys.

Sit straight.
Feet flat on floor.
Back touching chair support.

Forearms level with keyboard.
Wrists straight.
Elbows relaxed (90° angle).
3. Monitor Placement
Top edge of screen at eye level.
Distance: 60–65 cm.
4. Keyboard & Mouse Placement
Keep together, around 20 cm away.
5. Chair & Table
Ergonomic chair supports lower back.
Table should have enough legroom.
