Suggested Journal Club Discussion Questions


2012-2013

1. What is the research question? What are the researchers trying to answer? What is the study
designed to answer?

2. Study Variables: What is the measured exposure? What is the measured outcome? What
other variables did the study look at between the groups? Are there secondary outcomes
measured?

3. Study Design: Who are the subjects (inclusion and exclusion criteria)? Is the number of
subjects adequate enough to find a statistical significance in the outcomes measured? How is the
data obtained (basic methodology, survey questionnaire, etc.)? What type of study is this
(randomized control, retrospective cohort, etc.)? How did they try to limit study bias or
confounding factors?

4. Results: what are the results? Are they statistically significant?

5. Conclusions. What conclusions can we make from the results? Is this compatible with
previous medical knowledge? Are the results of the study valid?

6. Generalizability: Whom does this study apply to?

7. Strengths: what are the studies strengths? (RTC, large sample, good follow-up, few drop
outs, etc) did the study do a good job in limiting for confounding variables?

7. Limitations: what are the studies limitations? (No blinding, poorly designed questionnaire,
biases, etc.) What are potential biases in the study?

8. What do we do with this information from the study? How are we going to apply this in our
practice as residents (or attendings)? How can I apply these results to patient care?
