Topic: Challenges and prospects of Small Scale and Medium Enterprises (SME) financing
in Ghana: the financial institutions’ perspectives (National Investment Bank Ltd.)
The researchers of the above topic are MBA in Accounting and Finance students of UPSA. This
interview is being conducted to get your input about the aforementioned subject. We are
especially interested in any problems you have faced or are aware of and recommendations you
have.
We will be glad if you are candid to grant us tape recording of this conversation. I assure you
that all your comments will remain confidential. Again we will be compiling a report which will
contain staff comments without making any reference to individuals.
1. Question: -What are your general views on SME operations in the municipality as an
SME manager in your Organization?
2. Question: -Have SMEs lived up to expectation from your records?
3. Question -What do you think might account for this poor performance of SMEs in the
municipality?
4. Question -NIB has been recognized as one of the key Institutions in SME Financing, can
you please tell me the types of SME financing schemes you have in your institution and
how they are accessible to SMEs i.e. key requirements for granting credits to SMEs in
your bank.
5. Question -Are you able to achieve SME financing targets annually? On the average what
is the percentage of credit that is granted to SMEs out of the total target/budget yearly
basis. If No, why are you unable to grant all the credit as projected?
6. Question -Narrate the processes and procedures in managing some portfolio in your
organizations.
7. Question -Can you describe the performance of SME loans in your institution and the
industry at large?
8. Question -From your years of experience in SME financing, what are the
difficulties/challenges SMEs encounter in attracting finance from your institution? What
are the causes of these difficulties?
9. Question -Would you say inadequate financing and lack of managerial skills constitute a
major challenge in the performance of SMEs in Madina, the, Financial Institution’s view”
10. Question -How often do these difficulties /challenges lead to SMEs in the Municipality
loan applications being declined by your institution?
11. Question -Do you foresee increasing trend in SME financing in the future in spite of
these difficulties they face or otherwise?
12. Question -What do you think should be done to salvage or improve the situation in your
view?
