CYCLE TEST – II
PART C
Subject Code : EN8592 Marks : 60
Subject Title : WASTEWATER ENGINEERING Date : 26-04-21
Department : CIVIL ENGINEERING Time : 2pm to 3.30 pm
Year / Sem : III/VI
PART C (4*15=60 MARKS)
1)a) i) Explain the working of a Sequential Batch Reactor (5marks)
ii) Design the size of a high rate trickling filter
Sewage flow = 5MLD
Recirculation ratio = 1.5
BOD of raw sewage = 230mg/l
BOD Removal in PST= 30 %
Final effluent BOD= 25 mg/L (10marks)
OR
1) b)i) Explain with a neat sketch the working of UASB? (6marks)
ii)Design an waste stabilisation pond for a residential colony of 6000
persons contributing sewage at 120 L/capita/day. The 5day BOD of
sewage is 300 [Link] organic loading as 300kg/ha/day. Assume L:B =
2:1. Also find the detention time if depth of pond is 1m. (9marks)
2) a) Design a completely mixed activated sludge system to serve 60000 people
that will give a final effluent that is nitrified and has 5-day BOD not exceeding
25 mg/l. The following design data is available.
Sewage flow = 150 l/person-day = 9000 m3/day
BOD5 = 54 g/person-day = 360 mg/l ; BODu = 1.47 BOD5
Total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) = 8 g/person-day = 53 mg/l
Phosphorus = 2 g/person-day = 13.3 mg/l
Winter temperature in aeration tank = 18°C
Yield coefficient Y = 0.6 ; Decay constant Kd = 0.07 per day ; Specific substrate
utilization rate = (0.038 mg/l)-1 (h)-1 at 18°C
Assume 30% raw BOD5 is removed in primary sedimentation, and BOD5 going
to aeration is, therefore, 252 mg/l (0.7 x 360 mg/l). (15marks)
OR
2)b) Design a conventional ASP to treat settled domestic sewage with diffused
air aeration system for the following data:
Population = 1,20,000
Percapita sewage contribution = 160 LPCD
Settled sewage BOD5 = 200mg/L
Effluent BOD5 required = 15mg/L (15marks)
3 a)i)What do you understand by oxygen sag curve? What are its significance?
(5marks)
ii) A city discharges 1500 lit/sec of sewage into a stream whose minimum rate
of flow is 6500 lit/sec. The temperature of sewage as well as water is 20 oC. The
5 day BOD at 200C for sewage is 200 mg/lit and that of river water is 2mg/lit.
The DO content of sewage is zero and that of the stream is 90% of the
saturation DO. If the minimum DO to be maintained in the stream is 4.5 mg/lit,
find out degree of sewage treatment required. Assume the de-oxygenation
coefficient as 0.1 and re-oxygenation coefficient as 0.3. (10marks)
OR
3b)
(15 marks)
4 a)i) What are the factors controlling the self purification of rivers?(8marks)
ii)Explain in detail the various methods of disposal of sewage.(7marks)
OR
4 b)i) What are the different zones of pollution in a river polluted by
wastewater.(5marks)
ii)
(10 marks)
