Question [1] [10 Marks]
A. Write short notes on the following:
a) Different characteristics of loads which are met by electric drives. Explain them
with the help of torque-speed diagrams. (2 Marks)
b) Steady state stability of an electric drive. (1 Mark)
B. Explain the simplified speed-time curve for transportation drive and corresponding torque
and power curves on time base. Why modifications are necessary and how this curve gets
modified for suburban service for electric traction. (3 Marks)
C. An adjustable speed dc motor has a speed range of 3:1. If the motor draws an armature
current of 50 A at 1000 rpm, calculate the current at the speed of 3000 rpm when speed
control is achieved by (i) field flux control, and (ii) armature voltage control, with the motor
driving a load whose,
(a) load torque is constant, and
(b) load power is constant.
Neglect all losses and effect of armature reaction. (4 Marks)
Question [2] [10 Marks]
A. Write short notes on the following:
a) The various braking methods for dc motors. Which of these are possible with
thyristor converters. (3 Marks)
b) One method on how a 3-phase controlled converter can be used for a 4-quadrant
drive operation. Explain with the help of suitable figures. (3 Marks)
B. A dc, separately excited motor is driven by a 3-phase fully controlled ac/dc converter. The
voltage on the ac side is 120 V (rms). The field constant of the motor is kφ = 3 [Link]/rad. At
a load torque of 300 Nm and a triggering angle of 40o, the motor speed is 100 rpm, and the
armature current is continuous.
a) The polarities of the terminal voltage of the motor (armature voltage) are reversed,
and the triggering angle is simultaneously changed. Calculate the triggering angle that
stops the motor and keeps it at the holding position. Assume that the current is still
continuous. (3 Marks)
b) Sketch the speed-torque characteristics and indicate the steady-state operating points
before and after polarity reversal. (1 Mark)

Question (3) [10 marks]:
A. Explain briefly with neat sketches the principle of operation of combined rheostatic and
regenerative braking. Mention how switching between the types are done. ( 4 marks)
B. A dc-dc converter is used in a combined regenerative and rheostatic brake control of a
separately excited dc motor. The dc source is Vs = 600 V and the braking resistor is Rb = 20
Ω. The motor has Ra = 0.211 Ω and the back emf constant of 1.11 V/A-rad/s. The field
current is 4.13 A.
a) If the thyristor is being triggered, the power supplied by the motor via the converter
is 80.11 kW. Find the duty cycle and the speed of the motor in rpm. Which type of
braking control is in operation? ( 3 marks)
b) If the motor speed is 130 rad/s, and during deceleration of the motor, there is a
power loss of 3 kW in Ra. Which type of braking control do you suggest in operation?
Verify your answer. Calculate the converter duty cycle. (3 marks)
