Vector Algebra Triangle Project ISC Class 12

This project demonstrates the use of vector algebra to prove key properties of triangles, including the sine rule, cosine rule, area, medians, and altitudes. By representing triangle vertices as vectors and applying dot and cross products, classical geometric results are derived systematically. The conclusion emphasizes the effective connection between algebra and geometry in understanding triangle properties.

Preface
This project explores how vector algebra can be used to prove important properties of triangles
such as the sine rule, cosine rule, area, medians, and altitudes. By expressing triangle vertices as
vectors, we apply dot and cross products to derive classical geometric results in a systematic and
analytical manner.
Main Content
1. Vector Setup of Triangle

Let A be at the origin. Let OB = b and OC = c. Then AB = b, AC = c, and BC = c - b.

2. Cosine Rule Using Dot Product

|c - b|^2 = (c - b).(c - b) = |c|^2 + |b|^2 - 2 b.c

Since b.c = bc cos A, we get: a^2 = b^2 + c^2 - 2bc cos A

3. Sine Rule Using Cross Product

Area = 1/2 |b × c| = 1/2 bc sin A

Equating different area forms gives: a/sinA = b/sinB = c/sinC

4. Median Using Vectors

Midpoint M = (b + c)/2

AM = (b + c)/2

|AM|^2 = 1/4 (|b|^2 + |c|^2 + 2 b.c)

5. Area and Altitude

Area = 1/2 |b × c|

Height from C to AB = |b × c| / |b|

Conclusion
Vector algebra provides an elegant and powerful approach to proving triangle properties. Using dot
and cross products, we derived the cosine rule, sine rule, area, median, and altitude formulas in a
systematic manner, showing the strong connection between algebra and geometry.
