HUMIDITY
Question and Answers
Q1. What is precipitation?
A. Precipitation is defined as water in liquid or solid forms falling
on earth. Hail, snow, rain and drizzle are common forms of
precipitation.
Q2. What are the different forms of precipitation?
A. I. Hail
II. Snow
III. Rain
IV. Drizzle.
Q3. How is convectional rainfall caused?
A. Convectional rainfall is caused due to the intense heating of the
surface, the air above gets heated. Near the equatorial region the
air gets heated, expands and rises up convectionally holding
moisture. When it is cooled adiabatically, the temperature falls
below dew point, resulting in the formation of clouds.
Q4. Give the two characteristic features of convectional rainfall.
A. I. This type of rain mostly occurs at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
II. It is always torrential accompanied by lightning and
thunder. It is experienced in equatorial region.
Q5. What are the chief requirements for orographic rainfall?
A. Orographic rainfall occurs when moisture laden wind is forced
to rise along the side of the mountain and cooled adiabatically.
Then precipitation is form of rain or snow occurs on the
windward side of the mountain.
In India, the windward side of the Western Ghats gets maximum
moisture from monsoon winds whereas in the leeward side or the
rain shadow area receives very little rain.
Q6. What is the meaning of rain shadow? Give example.
A. The leeward side of the mountain range that remains relatively
dry is called the rain shadow area. Example:- The eastern slope
of Western Ghats.
Q7. What is cyclonic rainfall? Give the name of region where it is
experienced.
A. Depression or cyclonic rain occurs when a mass of warm air
meets the mass of cold air. The warm air is forced up above the
cooler air as it is lighter. Condensation takes place and the
clouds are formed followed by rain. Winter rainfall in northern
India is a typical example of cyclonic rainfall.
Q8. Name the three types of Rainfall.
A. I. Convectional rainfall
II. Orographic rainfall
III. Frontal or cyclonic rainfall.
Q9. Mention two characteristics of orographic rainfall.
A. I. When the moisture laden wind rises along the windward slope
of the mountain the pressure on it decreases, the air expands and
cools.
II. On the leeward side of the dry air descends the
mountain slope, the pressure decreases.
Q10. Name the factors necessary for convectional rainfall.
A I. Intense heating of the surface.
II. Abundant supply of moisture.
Q11. Where does cyclonic rainfall occur?
A. Cyclonic rainfall is common throughout the doldrums where the
trade winds meet.
