Exercise 2

 Context: It is November 2007 and Dr. Anderson is pregnant with


twins. She meets a colleague she has not seen for a few weeks.
Colleague: Are you having a baby?
Dr. Anderson: Yes.
 Is Dr. Anderson's reply true?

It can be true.

 Is Dr. Anderson's reply cooperative, according to Grice's


Cooperative Principle?
According to Grice's cooperative principle the conversations between
the colleague and Dr. Anderson's are expected. As the speaker,Dr.
Anderson's has to tell the truth or something that is provable by
adequate evidence, but for the situation, she just answered yes.

 What implicature arises from Dr. Anderson's reply?

Her reply may implicated that she might have a baby: now she is
pregnant or she might adopt a child.

Exercise 3

It's fairly common for people to ask, "Where did you grow up?" Each
of the following is a possible answer to the question, but not every
answer is cooperative in every situation. For each of the following,
what context would you have to be in for the answer to be a
cooperative answer to the question? Why?

 "in Canada"
 "on Arkell St. in Westdale"
 "near Toronto"
 "in Binbrook"

I grew up in Canada, on Arkell St in Westdale near Toronto.

Exercise 4
Consider the following conversation:

A: Is Dave going to finish his part of the project on time?

B: He said he would finish it.

Is Person B flouting any conversational Maxims? I think the person B


did not flout any conversational Maxims.

Is Person B obeying any Maxims? What does Person B implicate?

I think the person B is obeying the Maxim, he is trying to paraphrase


Dave’s answer about the question is he going to finish his part of the
project on time.

Exercise 5

Use the Endangered Languages Project website to discover an


endangered language that is spoken close to where you currently are,
then write down the following facts about the language:

 the name of the language (or names, if it has more than one),
e.g. Kanien'kéha or Mohawk
 a brief geographic description of where it is spoken, e.g. in the
territory that is now known as southern Ontario and northern
New York, along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River
 How many living speakers does the language have?
 Is there any documentation of the language, such as
dictionaries or grammar resources?
 Are any revitalization efforts taking place?

Bikya, is spoken in the North-West Region of Cameroon, in western


Africa. The last record of a speaker was in 1986, meaning the
language could be extinct by now. This predicament resembles
that of another Cameroonian language, Bishuo, whose last
recorded speaker was also in 1986. There has no revitalization
efforts taking place.
