Tutorial 4

This document outlines the instructions for Tutorial #4 of ME 219 (Fluid Mechanics) dated February 4, 2026. It includes guidelines for submission, such as including personal details and following a specific problem-solving methodology. The tutorial consists of three problems related to fluid flow, including oil flow on an incline, velocity in a reducing bend, and estimating fill time for a tank.

ME 219 (Section 3): Fluid Mechanics

Tutorial # 4: February, 4 2026

Note:
• Put your name, Roll number, Batch number and the Problem number that you are
solving.
• Ensure all solutions in a given batch are stapled at the left top corner in the correct
order.
• Solutions MUST follow the Problem solving methodology outlined in the Course
Policy document, failing which they will NOT be graded.
• Write legibly, clearly cancel out unwanted work, if not – the work that appears
first will be considered for evaluation.

Problem 1: Oil flows steadily in a thin layer

down an inclined plane as shown in the
y
figure. The velocity profile is given by
g sin 
 y2 
u( y ) =  hy − . Express mass h u
2  2  x
flow rate per unit width, in terms of  ,  , ,

g and h. Also, calculate the average velocity
and wall shear stress.

Problem 2: A two-dimensional reducing

bend has a linear velocity profile at Section 1.
The flow is uniform at Section 2 and 3. The
flow is steady and incompressible, find the
maximum velocity at Section 1.

Problem 3: The pipe shown in the figure

alongside is used to fill a tank. At t = 0, the
water level in the tank is 30 cm. Starting from
the fundamental equation, listing
assumptions and clearly showing the CV,
estimate the time taken to fill the remaining
volume of the tank.
