SELF LEARNING ASSESSMENT:01

Topic:

Identify user requirements through research methods (e.g. Interview/

Questionnaire etc.).

1. User Interviews

1.1 Introduction to User Interviews

User interviews are a qualitative research method used to collect detailed insights directly from
potential users through one-to-one conversations. In the design process of the Clock App with
Alarm and Stopwatch UI, user interviews were conducted to understand time management habits,
alarm usage patterns, stopwatch needs, usability expectations, and reliability concerns. Since
clock applications are used daily and often in time-sensitive situations, interviews were chosen to
capture real-life experiences, frustrations, and expectations that structured surveys alone cannot
fully reveal.

Unlike quantitative methods, interviews allow flexibility in questioning and enable follow-up
questions based on participant responses. This helps uncover hidden needs such as quick alarm
setup, ease of switching between clock modes, clarity of display, and notification preferences.
These insights strongly influence UI design decisions. The interview findings helped shape the
app’s navigation structure, alarm-setting process, stopwatch controls, timer interface, and overall
feature priorities.

1.2 Objectives of Conducting Interviews

The interviews were designed with specific research objectives:
• To understand how users currently use clock, alarm, stopwatch, and timer features in their daily
routine
• To identify pain points in existing clock or alarm applications
• To learn preferred ways of setting alarms (manual time input, scroll picker, quick presets, voice
input)
• To understand how quickly users expect to set an alarm or start a stopwatch
• To identify situations where stopwatch and timer features are most commonly used (study,
workouts, cooking, exams, etc.)
• To explore expectations for alarm customization (tone, vibration, snooze options, repeat
settings)
• To understand user concerns regarding reliability, missed alarms, and notification behavior
• To gather UI design preferences for display clarity, font size, theme (dark/light), and button
placement

These objectives ensured that interviews produced actionable UI and feature requirements rather
than general opinions.
1.3 Participant Selection
Participants were selected from the primary target group of the Clock App with Alarm and
Stopwatch:

• Students and young adults (age 16–28)

• Smartphone users
• Individuals who regularly use alarms for waking up or reminders
• Users who use stopwatch or timer for study sessions, workouts, cooking, or exams
• Mixed gender and academic backgrounds

A total of 8 participants were interviewed. This sample size is considered acceptable for early-
stage UI requirement discovery because qualitative research focuses on depth of insights rather
than large-scale statistical representation.

1.4 Interview Structure and Method

A semi-structured interview format was used. This means a prepared question guide was
followed, but additional probing questions were asked depending on participant responses. This
method balanced consistency with flexibility and allowed deeper understanding of time-
management habits and clock usage behaviour.

Interview duration: 10–15 minutes per participant

Mode: In-person and video calls
Recording method: Written notes (no audio recording to maintain comfort)
Consent: Participants were informed that responses would be used for academic purposes

The interview was divided into sections:

• Daily time management habits
• Alarm usage patterns
• Stopwatch and timer usage behaviour
• App usage experience
• UI preferences
• Feature expectations
• Reliability and notification concerns

1.5 Sample Interview Question Areas

Stopwatch.
2. Surveys/Questionnaires
2.1 Introduction to Surveys
Surveys and questionnaires are quantitative research methods used to collect structured
data from a larger group of users. For the Clock App with Alarm and Stopwatch UI
design, a questionnaire was created to validate patterns observed in interviews and
measure broader user preferences. While interviews provided detailed insights, surveys
provided measurable trends and percentages to support design decisions with statistical
clarity.
This method helped identify common preferences in alarm setup style, stopwatch usage,
feature importance, UI layout, theme preference, reminder behavior, and reliability
expectations across a larger audience.

2.2 Objectives of the Survey

and measurable trends.
3. Observation
Based on the user interviews conducted for the Clock App with Alarm and
Stopwatch UI research, several behavioral and usability patterns were observed.
These observations helped translate raw interview responses into practical design
directions.
One of the strongest observations was that users prefer very fast interaction when
setting alarms or starting a stopwatch. Most participants said they would avoid
using an app if alarm setup required too many steps. Quick actions such as one-tap
alarm creation, easy time selection, and instant stopwatch start were repeatedly
preferred. This indicates that speed and simplicity are critical for daily usability.
Another important observation was that users see a clock app as a utility tool that
must work instantly and reliably. They do not want unnecessary animations,
complex settings, or feature overload. The interface should feel clean, efficient,
and easy to navigate rather than complicated or technical.
It was also observed that many users felt frustrated with existing apps due to
missed alarms, low volume alerts, or confusing snooze controls. This shows that
reliability and clarity are more important than having too many extra features.
Participants showed strong interest in clear visual display. Large digital time,
readable fonts, and simple layouts were preferred. Users want information that can
be understood at a glance, especially during early mornings or time-sensitive
situations.
Another repeated observation was that customization is important but should
remain simple. Users want options such as alarm tone selection, repeat settings,
and snooze duration control, but they do not want to navigate through multiple
complex menus.
Theme preference observations showed that dark mode is highly preferred,
especially for night-time usage, while light mode should also be available for
daytime clarity.
Overall, interview observations indicate that the Clock App with Alarm and
Stopwatch should prioritize:
• Fast alarm setup
• One-tap stopwatch and timer controls
• Minimal steps and simple navigation
