Read Me with a Heart!


Read through the following passage. Encircle the signal words found in the paragraph. Then
complete the table below the paragraph.

I woke up late this morning because my alarm clock did not ring. As a result, I had to rush to get
ready for school and I made a huge mess all over the house. I missed the bus because I had to go
back home to fetch my cellphone. Consequently, I was late for school, and my lecturer was not
pleased with me at all. Due to the fact that my day had been going so badly, I was in a bad mood
and I shouted at my friends. Since I was in such a bad mood, they didn’t want to hang out with
me and they left. After they left, my day only got worse. In view of all that happened today, I’ve
decided that I need two alarm clocks instead of one, to make sure I wake up on time in the
mornings.

Directions: Determine which is the cause and which is the effect in each sentence. Underline the

1. Jane never brushed her hair, so she got dreadlocks.
2. John didn’t do the laundry, so he wore dirty clothes.
3. The fish grew lungs and drowned.
4. Phoebe told a joke, and Mom laughed.
5. Kyle used paperclips because he was out of staples.
6. Alison dislikes hot dogs, so she only eats French fries.
7. The weather is getting cooler, and the leaves changed colors.
8. Mark sneezed because he is allergic to cats.
9. The cat never scratches because he is declawed.
10. George orders in a lot, because he can’t cook.
