UNIT I – Base band Transmission
1. State and proof sampling Theorem.
2. Draw and explain the block diagram of pulse code modulation system.
3. Define DM(Delta Modulation) with proper explanation and justify its drawbacks.
4. Explain Quantization.
5. Explain Companding.
6. A PCM system uses a uniform quantizer followed by a 7-bit binary encoder. The bit rate of
system is 50 x106 bits/sec. What is the maximum message BW for which the system operates
satisfactorily? What is the SNR for a full load sinusoidal signal?.
7. For a PCM system with maximum audio input frequency of 4KhZ, determine the minimum
sample rate and alias frequency produced if a 5 KhZ audio were allowed to enter the sampling
circuit.
8. Discuss on distribution of quantization errors in uniform quantizes and derive the relationship
between number of bits used in the encoder and signal to quantization noise ratio.
9. What is ISI and how could we remove it?
UNIT II – Digital Modulation Techniques
10. Explain coherent BPSK modulation technique with its signal space diagram, modulator and
demodulator diagrams.
11. Explain the modulation and demodulation of QPSK using figures. Compare BPSK and QPSK in
terms of error rates, bandwidth and power efficiency.
12. Draw the neat block diagram of QAM generator, explain its working.
13. Find the bit error probability for a BPSK system with a bit rate of 1Mbit/s. The received
waveforms s1(t)=Acosω1t and s2(t)=−Acosω2t, are coherently detected with a matched filter.
The value of A is 10 mV . Assume that the single-sided noise power spectral density is N0
=10−11 W/Hz and that signal power and energy per bit are normalized relative to a 1−Ω load?
14. Consider an AWGN channel with 4−kHz bandwidth and the noise power spectral density
η/2=10−12 W/Hz. The signal power required at the receiver is 0.1 mW. Calculate the capacity of
this channel. What is the goal of channel coding? Given a channel with an intended capacity of
20 Mbps and Bandwidth of 3 MHz .
15. What signal-to-noise ratio is required to achieve this capacity?
