Chapter: Light – Class 10 Science ✨
1. Introduction
• Light is a form of energy that enables us to see objects.
• Travels in a straight line in a homogeneous medium.
• Speed of light in air/vacuum: c = 3 x 10^8 m/s
2. Reflection of Light
Laws of Reflection
1. Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection (i = r)
2. Incident ray, reflected ray & normal lie in the same plane.
Types of Reflection
• Regular Reflection: Smooth surface, parallel rays remain parallel → clear image.
• Diffused Reflection: Rough surface, rays scatter → no clear image.
Important Terms
• Normal: Line perpendicular to reflecting surface at point of incidence.
• Image: Reproduction of an object formed by reflection.
3. Spherical Mirrors
Concave Mirror
• Curves inward (like a cave).
• Focal point (F): Point where parallel rays meet.
• Uses: Shaving mirrors, torches, solar concentrators.
Convex Mirror
• Curves outward.
• Focal point (F): Virtual, behind the mirror.
• Uses: Vehicle rear-view mirrors, security mirrors.
Mirror Formula
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
- f = focal length, u = object distance, v = image distance
1
Magnification
m = hi/ho = -v/u
- hi = image height, ho = object height
4. Refraction of Light
• Bending of light when it passes from one medium to another.
• Laws of Refraction:
• Incident ray, refracted ray & normal lie in the same plane.
• sin i / sin r = constant (n)
Important Terms
• Refractive Index (n): n = speed of light in air / speed of light in medium
• Lens Formula: 1/f = 1/v - 1/u
• Magnification of Lens: m = hi/ho = v/u
5. Lenses
Convex Lens
• Converging lens, brings parallel rays together.
• Uses: Magnifying glass, camera, projector.
Concave Lens
• Diverging lens, spreads parallel rays apart.
• Uses: Eyeglasses for myopia (short-sightedness).
6. Total Internal Reflection (TIR)
• Light reflects completely inside a denser medium.
• Condition: Angle of incidence > critical angle (i > C)
• Applications: Optical fibers, prism-based instruments.
7. Human Eye & Defects
• Eye parts: Cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve.
• Defects & Correction:
• Myopia (short-sighted): Concave lens.
• Hypermetropia (far-sighted): Convex lens.
• Presbyopia: Bifocal lens.
• Cataract: Clouding of lens.

8. Important Notes
• Speed of light in different media:
• Vacuum = 3 x 10^8 m/s
• Glass ≈ 2 x 10^8 m/s
• Focal length of concave mirror/lens: Positive, convex mirror/lens: Negative
• Image Formation: Use ray diagrams for clarity.
