Tutorial 01 Review of supports and equilibrium equations
Comments
(1) The purposes of this tutorial are to (a) encourage better preparation for this course, (b) refresh
your concept of equilibrium systems, and (c) improve your skills to use equilibrium equations.
(2) Example questions you may ask yourselves prior to the tutorial: (i) what are the equilibrium
equations in a 2D (two dimensional) system (how many independent equations)? (ii) What is a
reaction force or reaction moment? Why are the reaction forces and moment different in different
supports? (iii) What is an internal force or internal moment? (iv) How do I use a free-body diagram
(FBD) to determine reactions and internal forces and moment?
(3) We assume you know equilibrium and the equations and the determination of reactions/reaction
moment prior to taking this course. No worry if you have never learned the concept of internal
forces or internal moment. You will learn that in the upcoming lectures.

Part II
Question 1
For the beam and loading shown, (a) determine the reaction
forces and moment at B, (b) understand the results (why the
reaction moment is the value you will have obtained, while the
reaction forces…); recalculate the reaction forces and moment
if M0 = 2PL, or M0 = -PL.
Question 2
For the beam and loading shown, determine the reaction forces at
A and C. There is no force applied in the vertical direction, why are
the reactions not zero?
Question 3
For the beam and loading shown, determine the reactions at A and
E.
(1 kips = 1000 lb; lb = pound).
Question 4
For the structure and loading shown, (1)
Determine the reaction forces at C and G; explain
why the reactions at these two supports are
different in nature (directions); (2) determine the
internal forces and moment in the cable CD; (3)
determine the internal forces and moment (shear
force and bending moment) at both left and right
sides of Point E.
