Interviews: Best Practices & Example Questions

Introduction
This resource will help you conduct better interviews with potential VA’s for your Loom Alchemy
process.
Best Practices for interviewing
> Have your candidates spreadsheet open for each interview (make sure you change the
questions to suit the ones you pick below)
> Think of the qualities you are looking for a in a VA and make sure you have opportunities
to explore these qualities during the interview (e.g. if you want punctuality, see if they show
up on time)
> Don’t make it too easy for them. Uncover what their weaknesses are by asking hard &
complicated questions instead of directly asking
> Pay more attention to how they answer questions than what they actually say
> Listen to the sounds they make, especially when you ask them a question they haven’t
prepared for. (ie. sighs, grumbles, etc.)
> Be sure you are getting actual straight answers. If you ask them for an example and they
give you a general answer, dig back in and demand an example.
> Follow up with these responses with “It sounds like you hesitated with that one, what would
that be about?” This might feel uncomfortable at first, but 9/10 times they’ll uncover the
answer for you.
> To find out what their weaknesses are, do NOT ask what their weaknesses are. Instead,
Ask about their dislikes, the parts of the job that they don’t look forward to or wish someone
else would do for them
> Ask about favorites and least favorites. “What’s the best boss you’ve ever had, what made
them so great. Now tell me about a boss you didn’t like so much.” “Tell me about your
favorite part of your job, and your least favorite part of your job.”. This will help you gauge if
they’re a potential fit for you.
> Keep a casual tone to the conversation as this will help them open up and be themselves

Questions to ask (pick 5-10 depending on what you want to know & how long you
want the interview to go on for)
Open with…
Hey (name), it’s Charlie Morgan here with Imperium Agency. How are you doing today?
Excellent, well if you’re ready we can jump straight into this and kick this interview off?
OK cool, so let’s start here. First of all, I’d love to know… (insert first question).
1. What sort of work are you doing know? How come you’re looking for something new?
2. Can you give me an example of how you’ve effectively organised your time when
managing projects for clients?
3. Can you give me an example of a time where a problem came up with your work, but
you couldn’t get hold of your project manager, so had to solve it on your own? How
did you handle that situation?
4. What does your dream client look like?
5. Can you tell me about a past client you’ve loved working with? What did you like
about their personality, management style, etc?
6. What about your worst client? Tell me about your experience with a boss you didn’t
like and why…
7. Are you the kind of person to ask for direct feedback? Can you give me an example
of when you received feedback and acted on it?
8. Now, everyone has jobs they don’t enjoy. Can you tell me what type of work you don’t
enjoy, and have you found any ways to make that job more enjoyable?
9. I know you don’t know the skills/experience of all the other people I’m interviewing for
this job, but if you had to guess, what do you think you’re better at than everyone
else I’m interviewing? What’s your superpower?
a. This tells you their unique strengths and how they stand out from the other
candidates.
10. If you were offered this job and a couple of others at the same time, what are the
top two factors that would help you decide which job you take?
b. *Honestly assess if what they want are strengths of yours that you can offer to them.
11. Okay and I also wanted to confirm your pay rate, that is X correct?
c. Gauge if they are flexible or not.

12. What else would you like to share that we should know when considering you for this
position?
13. Okay awesome, do you have any questions for me?
OK. Those are all the questions I have for now. We’re interviewing a few more people and
will have a decision by (date). We’ll let you know on upwork if you’ve been successful or not.
Thanks for your time!
