Redesigning for Circular Economy Activity
Let us understand how the principles of the circular economy can be
applied to the design of everyday products.
Objective: Analyse circular economy principles to redesign an existing
product or service, focusing on minimising waste and maximising resource
efficiency.
Materials Needed:
• An everyday product (like a mobile phone, a pair of shoes, or a kitchen
appliance)
• Paper and pen for sketching ideas
• Research materials (internet access, books, etc.)
Task:
Choose a Product: Select an everyday product that you frequently use.
This could be anything from a mobile phone to a kitchen appliance.
Analyse the Current Design: Look at how the product is currently designed.
Consider how it’s made, what materials are used, how long it lasts, and
what happens to it at the end of its life.
Identify Opportunities for Improvement: Based on your analysis, identify
opportunities to reduce waste and increase resource efficiency. This could
involve using more sustainable materials, making the product easier to
repair, or designing it to be recyclable at the end of its life.
Redesign the Product: Sketch a new design for the product that
incorporates the improvements you’ve identified. Try to imagine how the
product could be made and used in a way that aligns with the principles of
the circular economy.
Reflect on the Changes: Reflect on how your redesigned product is
different from the original. How does it reduce waste and increase resource
efficiency? How might it impact the user’s experience?
