A1. Addition of vectors by construction
A north
Consider the vectors A and B shown in
the diagram alongside. Using the
head-to-tail method of vector addition, 4 units
draw a scale diagram to find the
magnitude and direction of the vectors
(a) A + B, and 120◦
(b) A − B.

A2. Algebraic addition and subtraction of vectors
y
(a) Using trigonometry, resolve the F2 = 17 N
vectors F1 and F2 shown opposite
20◦
into their x and y components.
(b) Hence find (i) F1 + F2 , and (ii) F1 = 12 N
F1 − F2 . 30◦

A3. Resolving vectors into components
A horizontal force F1 is applied to an
object on an inclined plane as shown.
(a) Resolve F1 into components parallel
F1
and perpendicular to the plane.
(b) Repeat (a) for a force F2 = −F1 .
(c) How do (i) the parallel components θ
of F1 and F2 compare, and (ii) the
perpendicular components of F1 and
F2 compare?

A4. Resolving vectors into components
A particle with weight W = 2 newtons y
x
lies on a plane inclined at an angle of 30◦
to the horizontal. Cartesian axes have b
been oriented with the x axis parallel to
the plane as shown. Resolve W into its x
W
and y components. 30◦

A5. Application of vectors
An aeroplane pilot sets a compass course due west and
maintains an air speed of 240 km h−1 . After flying for half an
hour, he finds himself over a town that is 150 km west and
40 km south of his starting point.
(a) Find the wind velocity, in magnitude and direction.
(b) If the wind velocity were 120 km h−1 due south, in what
direction should the pilot set his course in order to travel
due west? Take the same air speed of 240 km h−1 .
