Mathematics – Comprehensive Notes (10 Pages)

Page 1: Introduction to Mathematics

Mathematics is the study of numbers, shapes, patterns, and logical thinking. It is used in daily life activities
such as counting money, measuring time, cooking, and shopping. Mathematics helps develop problem-
solving skills and logical reasoning.

Mathematics is divided into many branches including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and statistics.

Page 2: Numbers and Number Systems

Numbers are used to count, measure, and calculate.

Types of numbers: - Natural numbers (1, 2, 3…) - Whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3…) - Integers (negative and
positive numbers) - Rational numbers (fractions) - Irrational numbers (√2, π)

Page 3: Basic Operations

There are four basic mathematical operations:

• Addition: combining numbers

• Subtraction: finding the difference
• Multiplication: repeated addition
• Division: sharing equally

These operations are the foundation of all mathematics.

Page 4: Fractions and Decimals

Fractions represent parts of a whole.

• Proper fractions
• Improper fractions
• Mixed numbers

Decimals are another way to represent fractions. They are used in measurements and money.

Page 5: Percentages
Percentages mean "out of 100".

Uses of percentages: - Marks and grades - Discounts - Interest rates - Data comparison

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

Page 6: Algebra Basics

Algebra uses letters and symbols to represent numbers.

Example: - x + 5 = 10

Algebra helps solve problems where values are unknown.

Page 7: Geometry
Geometry is the study of shapes and space.

Basic shapes: - Triangle - Square - Rectangle - Circle

Geometry deals with area, perimeter, and volume.

Page 8: Measurement
Measurement is the process of finding the size or amount of something.

Common measurements: - Length (meter) - Mass (kilogram) - Time (seconds, minutes) - Temperature
(degree Celsius)

Page 9: Data Handling

Data handling involves collecting, organizing, and interpreting data.

Methods include: - Tables - Bar graphs - Pie charts

Statistics help us understand information clearly.
