CE 312 BUILDING SYSTEM DESIGN

Assignment #2

Name: ASAS, MARY GRACE S.

Course, Year, & Section: BSCE 3C

I. Answer each question on a short bond paper; write your own answers in
paragraph form with 4-5 sentences each.

1. Explain how building envelope systems and assemblies contribute to

energy efficiency and occupant comfort in a building.

The building envelope serves as the protective shell of a structure, separating the
indoor space from the outside environment. It plays a major role in controlling
heat, air, and moisture flow which directly affects energy use and comfort levels.
For example, proper insulation, efficient windows and sealed joints help reduce
heat loss in colder months and limit heat gain during warmer months. This
reduces the need for excessive heating or cooling, lowering energy costs. At the
same time, it creates a stable and comfortable indoor environment for occupants.

2. Building materials and assemblies play a crucial role in the performance

of a structure. How do different materials affect aspects such as strength,
durability, and sustainability? Explain with examples how proper material
selection can contribute to better building design.

Building materials directly affect how strong, durable, and sustainable a structure
will be. For example, steel and reinforced concrete provide the strength needed
to support heavy loads, while materials like brick and treated wood offer durability
against weather and wear. Choosing sustainable options such as bamboo,
recycled steel, or reclaimed wood helps reduce environmental impact and
supports greener construction practices. The right materials can also improve
energy efficiency, like using insulated panels or double-glazed windows to lower
heating and cooling costs. By selecting materials wisely, builders can create
structures that are safe, long-lasting, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.
