1.​ What is the meaning of development? Explain the two aspects of


development?
Ans- Development refers to progress or improvement in lifestyle. Important
aspects of development are:

●​ Different persons can have different developmental goals.


●​ What may be development for one may not be development for the other.
It may even be destructive for others.

2.​ Explain why 'per capita income' is used to compare development


between countries.
Ans- Per capita income is the average income of a country's citizens. It is used
to compare development because it provides a standard measure of income,
allowing for objective comparisons between countries.

3.​ Describe the Human Development Index (HDI) and its components.
Ans- HDI is a composite index measuring a country's average achievements in
three basic dimensions:

●​ Health: Life expectancy at birth​

●​ Education: Mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling​

●​ Standard of Living: Gross National Income per capita


4.​ Explain the term 'sustainable development'.

Ans- Sustainable development refers to development that meets present needs


without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,
focusing on environmental conservation and resource efficiency.

5.​ Differentiate between 'economic development' and 'economic


growth'.

Ans- Economic Growth: Increase in a country's output of goods and services,


measured by GDP.​

Economic Development: Broader concept including improvements in living


standards, education, health, and environmental sustainability.

6.​ ‘What may be development for one may not be development for the
other.’ Explain by giving examples.

Ans- Industrialists may want more dams to get more electricity. But this may
submerge the land and disrupt the lives of people who are displaced – such as
tribals.

A farmer wants to sell foodgrains at a higher price but a low earning person
wants to purchase it at low prices.

More wages means development for a worker, but it negatively affects a


businessman.

7.​ Describe any three features of a developed country.

Ans- a. As per the World Bank Report 2016, any country with per capita income
of US$ 12,236 per annum and above is termed as a rich or developed country.

b. Such countries have high literacy rates.


c. Most of the people of these countries are engaged in the service sector.

8.​ Explain the concept of 'net attendance ratio'.

Ans- Net attendance ratio refers to the percentage of children of official school
age attending school, reflecting the effectiveness of educational policies and
access to education.
