Reflection on My Communication Strengths and Weaknesses
When I think about communication, it is confusing for me to decide what my
strengths and weaknesses are. Sometimes I feel like I am good at expressing
my ideas, but at other times I realize that maybe I am not as clear as I think.
Communication is not just speaking, it is also listening, writing, and even
body language, so in my case I will try to reflect on these different aspects.
One strength I believe I have is that I am usually quite confident when I
speak with my friends or in small groups. For example, in group projects at
university, I do not hesitate to share my opinions, and I can explain my
reasoning. I am also a good listener when people are presenting their ideas. I
try to pay attention and not interrupt, and later I can summarize what they
said. I think this helps when working in a team, because people feel
respected when I listen to them. Also, I feel that my writing is clear enough in
technical reports, since I usually organize information step by step.
However, there are also many weaknesses in my communication skills. One
big weakness is that when I talk to people I do not know well, especially in
formal settings, I tend to become nervous. My sentences become short, and I
cannot fully express my thoughts. Another weakness that I feel quite clearly
is in academic writing, because most of the time I use very simple words, so
the style looks unprofessional. When I did my last assignment, the teacher
said the content was acceptable, but the sentences were too basic. On top of
that, I have problems with English pronunciation, which makes it worse
because when talking, my classmates do not get what I mean immediately,
and then I must repeat the same words repeatedly, and that makes me feel
even less confident. Another thing, when I do presentations in front of many
people, I always prepare the slides carefully but when I stand there, I usually
look at the screen more than looking at the audience. That makes the
presentation not very good.
I think improving communication skills as a future engineer is very
important, because being an engineer is not only solving technical problems
but also explaining ideas, and persuading clients or team members. If I can
improve public speaking, I can explain my design better to managers or
clients. Also, writing better allows me to make professional reports, which is
important because engineers always have to submit project reports and
documentation. Listening skills and asking questions also matter a lot,
because if I understand clearly what the client wants, then the project will go
more smoothly. Nowadays, engineers work in international teams, so English
communication is important, otherwise it will be difficult to cooperate with
foreigners.
In conclusion, I know I have strengths speaking confidently in small groups
and listening to people, but I also see many weaknesses such as small
vocabulary, nervous speaking in formal situations, and presentation
problems. If I can fix these slowly, I think I will become a better
communicator. This is not only for my studies now but also for later when I
work as an engineer, because communication is sometimes just as important
as technical skills.
