General Information
Service activities must only be performed by appropriately trained, authorized service staff
of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG.
Additional, applicable literature is the IOLMaster XP user manual, cat. no. 1261-279. Knowledge
of the user manual's contents and of the operation of the instrument is prerequisite for the
performance of service activities on the IOLMaster XP and for the use of the service manual.
The service manual essentially deals with the defined spare parts and describes the exchange of
defined spare parts and modules. Any necessary alignment, adjustment and computer
procedures are also described in this service manual; they require skills in the handling of
computer technology and of mechanical, optical and electronic components.
Passwords, which are communicated during the service training, may only be used by
service staff. Passwords must not be passed on to customers.
We consider service training to be essential for the reliable execution of the service activities.
Name of the instrument:
The name of the instrument is IOLMaster. To be able to distinguish between the various
configurations, the name IOLMaster XP is used in the service manual.
System maintenance, service
The system normally does not require servicing. However, we recommend one maintenance
checkup per year under a service contract. Please also see the notes on safety checks,
maintenance and care in the user manual.
Cleaning and Care
The optical surfaces can be cleaned using a 9:1 ether-alcohol mixture, a special optics cleaning
mixture (SM-30-8005-32) or methanol.
Service notes
Unpacking, installation and cabling of the instrument are described in the user manual.
Please note in particular the safety notes, technical specifications and other service information
contained in the user manual.
Modules and spare parts that can be changed by service staff without any special training being
required are not described in this manual.
Mounting components are not supplied with the spare parts and must therefore be re-used when
exchanging modules.
Safety notes
Caution: Disconnect the instrument from the line power before opening it.
Hazardous voltages are accessible after the instrument has been opened. Make sure
to take appropriate safety precautions to prevent contact with hazardous voltages,
and to comply with the relevant work regulations.
After every service activity, check the complete instrument for correct function and, if
necessary, for electrical safety.
Checking the electrical safety
Checking the electrical safety is required after each maintenance or repair in accordance with the
instructions in bulletin 400 of Jan. 27, 2005.

measurement markings should be centered relative to the crosshairs.
The coupler must be aligned in such a way that the "correct" cycle with the switching
sequence 00 is used. If this is not the case, there will be an offset of 4 steps.

Overview position:
The overview position is reached after 29x steps, with the coupler position having to be 0.
This position is reached by aligning the mobile actuating flag.
The magnification changer may only move within the end positions. Positions outside these
limits will not be taken into consideration by the program. The magnification will then move
towards the mechanical end position.

• Switch on the IOLMaster and select the "Overview image" mode.
• Start the PIO Test program and select the "Motors" function.
• Click on the "Changer" function.
; Changer in the overview position
Changer in the magnification or
measurement position
• Close the PIO Test window and end the service
program.
• Switch between the "Overview image" and
"Keratometer" modes several times, then set
the KER mode. Align the IOLMaster horizontally
and vertically with the test sphere in such a way
that the keratometer measurement markings
are exactly symmetrical to the crosshairs of the
display.
• Lock the base in position.
• Use the <Alt>+<Tab> keys to bring the "Motors" window to the foreground.
• Move the window until the video image becomes visible and operation of the changer motor is
still possible in the window.
• Click on "Step +” several times and move the changer to the left in steps until the "Barr"
signal (light barrier) changes from 0 to 1.

• Click on "Step -” several times and move the changer to
the right in steps until the "Barr" signal changes from 1
to 0.
Note: This signal change should occur 2, or better 3 steps Measurement Position
before stepper motor phase 00 is reached, i.e. in changer
phase 11 or better in phase 10.
If the switching point of the coupler is not as
specified above, the coupler position must be Fixed actuating flag

readjusted to the left or right.
The lateral offset of the keratometer measurement
markings relative to the crosshairs of the display
occurring with this alignment can be corrected by
adjusting the CCD camera.
• Close the "Motors" window.
• Select the "Surrounding field image" mode. coupler
• Use the <Alt>+<Tab> keys to bring the "Motors" window
to the foreground.
• Click on "Step -” several times and move the changer to the right until the "End" signal
changes from 0 to 1.
• Click on "Step +” several times and move the changer to the left until the "End" signal
changes from 1 to 0.
• Click on "Step -” several times and move the changer to the right until the "Barr" signal
changes from 0 to 1.
• Click on "Step +” several times and move the changer back until the "Barr" signal changes to
0. Recheck whether 2 to 3 further steps are required to ensure that the surrounding field
image lies in the center.
Note: This signal change should occur 2, or better 3 steps before the centered image position is
reached (light spots of the surrounding field illumination are laterally symmetrical to the
crosshairs of the display).
If the switching point of the light barrier is not positioned as required, the position of the
actuating flag must be aligned.
Adjusting and saving the changer steps
Note: The horizontal position of the overview image is determined by the changer steps. A
change of the changer step will not change the measurement position.
The vertical position of the overview image is determined by the position of the CCD
camera.
• For a centered overview image, the values displayed under "Step" and "New" should be
identical. If this is not the case, save the value under "New" to the EEPROM as new value by
clicking on "Set".
• Close the "Motors" window and switch between the "Surrounding field" and "Keratometer"
modes several times; while doing this, check whether the images are laterally centered
relative to the crosshairs of the display in both cases.
Note: During the alignment and manual setting of the changer it may happen that the
synchronization between the stepper motor and the computer is lost. This becomes visible
by a large offset of the image when approaching one or the other changer position. In this
case, shut down the computer and switch it off and on again.
