Parts of Speech

English words are classified into eight main parts of speech. Understanding them helps you
form correct sentences.

1.​ Noun – a person, place, thing, or idea​

○​ Examples: teacher, school, book, happiness​

2.​ Pronoun – replaces a noun​

○​ Examples: he, she, it, they​

3.​ Verb – action or state of being​

○​ Examples: run, jump, is, was​

4.​ Adjective – describes a noun or pronoun​

○​ Examples: beautiful, tall, red​

5.​ Adverb – describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb​

○​ Examples: quickly, very, well​

6.​ Preposition – shows a relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words​

○​ Examples: in, on, under, between​

7.​ Conjunction – connects words, phrases, or clauses​

○​ Examples: and, but, because​

8.​ Interjection – expresses emotion​

○​ Examples: Wow! Oh! Hurray!​

2. Sentence Structure

A sentence must have a subject (who or what) and a predicate (what the subject does or is).
●​ Simple Sentence: contains one independent clause​

○​ Example: The cat sleeps.​

●​ Compound Sentence: contains two independent clauses joined by a conjunction​

○​ Example: The cat sleeps, and the dog plays.​

●​ Complex Sentence: contains one independent clause and one dependent clause​

○​ Example: The cat sleeps while the dog plays.​

3. Tenses

Tenses tell us when an action happens.

1.​ Present Tense – happening now or regularly​

○​ I eat breakfast every day.​

2.​ Past Tense – happened before​

○​ I ate breakfast yesterday.​

3.​ Future Tense – will happen later​

○​ I will eat breakfast tomorrow.​

Each tense also has simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous forms for more
advanced learning.

4. Vocabulary Building

●​ Learn synonyms (words with the same meaning)​

○​ happy → joyful, glad, pleased​

●​ Learn antonyms (words with opposite meanings)​


○​ hot ↔ cold​

●​ Use context clues to understand new words in reading passages.​

5. Reading Comprehension

●​ Skim and scan: Quickly look for main ideas and keywords.​

●​ Ask questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How.​

●​ Summarize: Put the passage in your own words.​

Example:

Passage: “The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.”

Summary: The sun moves from east to west every day.

6. Writing Skills

●​ Start with a topic sentence – main idea of your paragraph.​

●​ Use supporting sentences – give details or examples.​

●​ End with a concluding sentence – sum up your paragraph.​

Example Paragraph:

Topic: My Favorite Animal

Paragraph: “My favorite animal is the dog. Dogs are loyal and friendly. They can protect their
owners and also play games. That is why I love dogs.”

7. Speaking and Listening

●​ Speaking: Practice pronunciation, intonation, and using full sentences.​


●​ Listening: Focus on key ideas, tone, and context to understand meaning.​

Tip: Try reading aloud and summarizing what you hear to improve both skills.

8. Common Grammar Mistakes to Avoid

●​ Subject-verb agreement: He go → He goes​

●​ Incorrect tense: Yesterday I go → Yesterday I went​

●​ Confusing words: their/there/they’re​

9. Practice Activity
