Assignment 1 Questions

The document outlines assignment questions for MEC E 250: Engineering Mechanics II, focusing on various problems related to dynamics. It includes calculations for car deceleration to avoid collisions, the speed of blocks under friction, and the dynamics of a cue ball collision. The problems require application of principles of mechanics and energy.

MEC E 250: Engineering Mechanics II - Assignment 1

Materials are edited/adopted from: Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics by Russell C. Hibbeler, 2021 (15th Edition),
Pearson (Mandatory Textbook).

(Problem 12–17) Q1: Car B is traveling a distance d ahead of car A. Both cars are traveling at 60 ft/s when the
driver of B suddenly applies the brakes, causing his car to decelerate at 12 ft/s2. It takes the driver of car A 0.75 s
to react (this is the normal reaction time for drivers). When he applies his brakes, he decelerates at 15 ft/s2.
Determine the minimum distance d between the cars so as to avoid a collision.

(Problem 13-26) Q2: At a given instant the 10-lb block A is moving

downward with a speed of 6 ft/s. Determine its speed 2 s later if block B
has a weight of 4 lb, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between it and
the inclined plane is μk = 0.2. Neglect the mass of the pulleys and cord.

(Problem 14-24) Q3: At a given instant the 10-lb block A is moving downward
with a speed of 6 ft/s. Determine its speed 2 s later. Block B has a weight of 4 lb,
and the coefficient of kinetic friction between it and the horizontal plane is μk =
0.2. Neglect the mass of the cord and pulleys. [Use Principle of Work and
Energy]

(Problem 15-77) Q4: The cue ball A is given an initial velocity (vA)1 = 5 m/s. If it makes a direct collision with
ball B (e = 0.8), determine the velocity of B and the angle θ just after it rebounds from the cushion at C (e′ = 0.6).
Each ball has a mass of 0.4 kg. Neglect their size.
