Course Description
This subject matter covers the lists of the major types of study designs, research proposal writing
skills, critical appraisal of scientific papers and applicant in of statically packages to health
officer students. It enables the student to develop, and analysis the actual research project in the
alleviating the major public health problems.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
o Explain what health research means
o List the major types of study designs
o Prepare a research protocol/proposal for conducting simple research
o Describe the main issues in the design, conduct and presentation of research
o List the major elements that need to be examined when making a critical assessment
of a research paper
Course Contents
 Health research including its rationale
 Identify and prioritize health research topic
 Develop research proposal
 Interpret research findings appropriately
 Research writing and presentation skills
 Critical appraisal of scientific paper
 Explain principles of research ethics
