Subject - Application for Mechanical Placement Engineer – R&D Internship

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in the Mechanical Engineering placement position at Taylor

Hobson. As a Mechanical Engineering Design student at Oxford Brookes University, on a track
to achieve a 2:1 grade. I am particularly motivated by the process of developing engineering
concepts and driving them through design and analysis into test-ready prototypes, and I am
passionate about building this capability under the mentorship of experienced engineers.

My academic projects demonstrate this end-to-end development approach. In a Screw Pump

Design project, I progressed an initial concept into a fully defined CAD assembly, produced
manufacturing drawings with GD&T, and validated performance through stress analysis. When
testing highlighted sealing failures, I redesigned an O-ring groove to BS4518 standards,
improving reliability through an iterative, evaluation-driven process. This reflects how Taylor
Hobson refines concepts into robust, specification-compliant products.

Similarly, in a Suspension Upright Design project, I developed a lightweight component from

concept to a manufacturing-ready design using SolidWorks and FEA. Through multiple design
iterations, I optimised load paths and safety factors to meet Formula Student regulations,
balancing performance, manufacturability, and testing requirements. Working within a team, I
incorporated feedback and technical guidance to refine the final solution mirroring development
under senior engineering mentorship.

I am particularly suited to this role because I combine strong CAD/FEA capability with a
practical, open-minded approach to learning and iteration. I actively seek feedback, understand
the importance of testing and evaluation, and enjoy refining designs until they meet demanding
technical criteria.

Taylor Hobson’s focus on precision engineering and R&D excellence strongly aligns with my
skills and career goals. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to your team while
continuing to develop as an engineer in a high-precision environment.

Yours sincerely,
Shubham Kumar
