Comparison of Fractions
🔎 What does it mean to compare fractions?
- When we compare fractions, we want to
know which is bigger than, smaller than, or
if they are equal to each other.
- Sometimes fractions look different but have
the same value → these are called equivalent
fractions.
- To see this clearly, we can use pictures, bar
models, or fraction walls.
How can we create equivalent fractions?
To create equivalent fractions using multiplication
and division:
1. Multiply both the numerator and the
denominator by the same number. An infinite
number of equivalent fractions can be
created this way.
2. Divide both the numerator and denominator
by a common factor. There may be more than

denominator have both been

3 is a common factor of 6 and 9.
Divide both the numerator and
denominator by 3. This gives
2. Divide both the numerator and denominator 2⁄3. 6⁄9 is equivalent to 2⁄3
by a common factor. There may be more than

1. Find the lowest common multiple (LCM) of the
denominators.
2. Rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions
with the same denominator.
3. Add the numerators.
4. Simplify where possible.
5. If the sum is an improper fraction, the answer

used as the common denominator. However, the
most efficient way of adding fractions with different
denominators is to use the LCM.
How to add improper fractions
Operations with fractions - Addition (+)
and mixed numbers?
To Add Improper Fractions:
When we add improper fractions, we can do it in
two easy ways:
1. Find a common denominator and add them just
like regular fractions.
2. Or, change the improper fractions into mixed
numbers.
To Add Mixed Numbers
1. Add the whole numbers.
2. Make the denominators the same (use
equivalent fractions). 💡 Tip: You can also turn
3. Add the fractions. mixed numbers back into
4. Simplify if you can. improper fractions first, then
add them the same way!

How to multiply fractions?
Multiplying fractions is one of the easiest operations with
fractions! All you have to do is multiply the numerators,
then multiply the denominators!

How to multiply mixed numbers?
To multiply mixed numbers:
1. Rewrite the mixed numbers as improper fractions. This
is done by multiplying the integer by the denominator
and adding the numerator.
2. If required, simplify before calculating using the
greatest common factor (GCF).
3. Multiply the numerators.
4. Multiply the denominators.
