Dinosaur Notes ?

Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era, which consisted of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, and they varied greatly in size and diet. They are classified as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores and are known for their strong legs, egg-laying, and possible warm-bloodedness. Dinosaurs went extinct around 66 million years ago, likely due to a giant asteroid impact that disrupted the food chain, and birds are considered their modern descendants.

Dinosaur Notes 🦖

What are dinosaurs?

● Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived millions of years ago.
● They lived during the Mesozoic Era, also called the Age of Dinosaurs.
● They lived on land, not in water or air.
● Some were very small, and some were extremely large.

When did dinosaurs live?

The Mesozoic Era had 3 periods:

1. Triassic Period (about 250–200 million years ago)

○ First dinosaurs appeared
○ Mostly small dinosaurs
2. Jurassic Period (about 200–145 million years ago)
○ Dinosaurs became bigger
○ Famous dinosaurs like Stegosaurus lived here
3. Cretaceous Period (about 145–66 million years ago)
○ More advanced dinosaurs
○ Famous dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex)
○ Dinosaurs went extinct at the end

Types of dinosaurs based on diet

Herbivores (plant-eaters)

● Ate plants only

● Usually had flat teeth
● Example: Triceratops, Brachiosaurus

Carnivores (meat-eaters)

● Ate other animals

● Had sharp teeth and claws
● Example: T-rex, Velociraptor

Omnivores (ate both)

● Ate plants and animals

● Less common

Dinosaur characteristics
● Most had strong legs
● Some walked on 2 legs, others on 4 legs
● Some had scales, some had feathers
● They laid eggs
● They were cold-blooded or possibly warm-blooded (scientists still debate this)

How do we know about dinosaurs?

● Scientists study fossils
● Fossils are preserved bones or remains
● Scientists who study dinosaurs are called paleontologists

Why did dinosaurs go extinct?

Most scientists believe extinction happened because of:

● A giant asteroid hit Earth

● It caused dust to block sunlight
● Plants died → herbivores died → carnivores died
● This happened about 66 million years ago

Important fact
● Birds today are believed to be descendants of dinosaurs
