(a) 230 𝑛𝑚 (b) 345 𝑛𝑚 (c) 460 𝑛𝑚 (d) 690 𝑛𝑚

Ans 2. When light travels from air into a medium with a speed of 1.5 × 108 𝑚𝑠−1 and a wavelength of

Que 2. (a) How are infrared waves produced? Why are these waves referred to as heat waves? Give
any two uses of infrared waves. [ 0.5 ]

(b). How are X-rays produced? Give any two uses of these [ 0.5 ]

Ans 2 (a) . Infrared waves are produced by the thermal vibrations of atoms and molecules. As objects
get hotter, the atoms and molecules in them move faster, and this movement creates electromagnetic
radiation in the form of infrared waves.

Infrared waves are often referred to as heat waves because they are associated with the transfer of
thermal energy. When infrared waves are absorbed by an object, they cause the molecules in the
object to vibrate more, which leads to an increase in the object's temperature.

Two uses of infrared waves are:

1. Infrared waves can be used to create images of objects based on their temperature. This is
commonly used in medical imaging to diagnose injuries or diseases, as well as in building inspection
to identify areas of heat loss.

2. Infrared waves can be used for short-range wireless communication, such as in remote controls
for electronic devices or in communication between smartphones and other devices.

Ans 2 (b). X-rays are produced when fast-moving electrons collide with a target material, typically a
metal such as tungsten. This collision causes the electrons to slow down, and as they do so, they
release energy in the form of X-rays.

Two uses of X- rays are :

1. X-rays are commonly used to create images of the inside of the human body, allowing doctors to
see bones, organs, and other structures.

2. X-rays are also used in a variety of industrial applications, such as inspecting welds and checking
for defects in metal castings.
