Mid Winter Semester Examination, 28th Feb 2023; Time -2 hours; Full Marks 64

[Link] 4th ECE; Subject : CONTROL SYSTEMS ;Course Code ECC/08

Open book test permitted to bring one A-4 page of own handwritten notes

1. Decide with proper justification or working whether the following statements

are True or False Each is of 2 marks. ( Total=14 marks). No marks for
incorrect justifications.

(a
A systenm defined by y(t) = n't x(t), is linear but not time invariant. Assume
that n is a real number greater than 0.

For the transfer function gs) = S+2

(b) u s+3s-4' the differential equation isgiven
by ÷+ 3j÷ -4y= u+2.
Considering the ramp response of a first order system, after the transient part of
(C) the response decays, the input and output signals are parallel.

(e) (2-s)
Given that F(s) = (s-1)(s+2)? the value of f(t) as t ’ o is zero.

(f) It is possible for two second order systems to have the same 5% settling time but
different values for overshoot and rise time.

matrix 2x3
(e) A system state space model has the A matrix 3 x3, B matrix 3x2, C
and null D matrix. It is thus a third order system with 2 inputs and 3 outputs.

2. There are 6 subparts to this question each of 6 marks: Total = 36 marks

Please show your working used to arrive at the answer.

(a Sketch the region in the s-plane in which the poles should be located to meet
the following specifications.
(i) System A E>0.707 and w, >2rad/sec
(11) System B: Settling timne <lsec, and peak time < 0.5 sec
Use two different planes to show the sketches for the two systems.
(b) A first order system ( K= 3, T = 0.66)
as shown in the right is applied 50%
negative feedback. For the closed loop
system, determine the new value of
DC gain and time constant. Give a5
rough sketches of the step responses
(i) with and (ii) without feedback.
(c) Figure-1 shows the unit step response for a second order system. Find out the
static _gain of the system, % overshoot and the steady state errors for step, ramp
and parabolic input. Give an approximate measure of the rise time and settling
time seen from figure 1. Write down the cxpression for the transfer function.

the closed loop system willhave an overshoot less than 16.7%. What will be the
steady state error of the closed-loop system responding to a unit step? Use the
following approximation for overshoot.

3 Mention some advantages of state space modeling as compared to transfer

function based approach. Determine the state space representation of the
following two systems. Total = 14 marks (4+5+5 ). Allworking to be shown.
(a) (b) Take v1 and vT as state variables

Is the state space representation you

have obtained unique? Give reasons
for your answer.

Can you take the voltages across the

two resistors as state variables? Give
reasons for your answer.
