MTL 7360: Tutorial 1

(Due on 23 January, 2026)

Problem 1 (18 points)

For each of the following, determine whether or not the given expression is a valid indicial notation
expression. If it is not valid, state why. If it is valid, identify the free and dummy indices, and determine
the number of expanded equations represented. Give the expanded equations.

(a) ams = bm (cr − dr )

(b) ti = σji nj

(c) ti = σji ni

(d) σij = 2µεij + λεkk δij

(e) xi xi = α2

(f) bij cj = 3

Problem 2 (16 points)

(a) δij δjk δkp δpi

(b) eijk δjk

(c) Aik δkj

(d) eijk uj uk

Problem 3 (12 points)

 
δip δiq δir
(a) Considering the identity, eijk epqr = det  δjp δjq δjr , show that eijk eiqr = δjq δkr − δjr δkq .
δkp δkq δkr

(b) Using the above identity, eijk eiqr = δjq δkr − δjr δkq , evaluate eijp eijq and eijk eijk .

Problem 4 (12 points)

For an orthonormal, right-handed Cartesian basis {ei }, the basis vectors are related by ei × ej = eijk ek .

(a) Verify the above expression by expanding for the cases (i) i = 1, j = 2, (ii) i = 2, j = 3, and (iii)
i = 3, j = 1.

(b) Show that ei = 21 eijk ej × ek .

(b) Show that Bpq = epiq bi

(c) Show that Bij Bij = 2bi bi

(d) Show that Bij Bjk = bi bk − (bp bp )δik

Problem 6 (6 points)
Consider the following relationship between two tensors Sij and Tij given by, Sij = αTij +βTkk δij , where
α and β are scalar constants. Explicitly calculate (a) Tkk and (b) Tij in terms of Sij and Skk .
Problem 7 (12 points)
Given arbitrary vectors u and v and arbitrary second-order tensors A and B, using component notation

Given a nonsingular second-order tensor F, show that C = FT F is symmetric and positive definite.
Why is it necessary that F be nonsingular?
