Class 9 Civics – Democratic Rights (Q1–16

Answers)

1. Case of Guantanamo Bay Prison:

About 600 people were secretly detained by the U.S. Army without trial. Families, lawyers and even
the UN were not allowed to meet them. Prisoners faced torture and no legal protection. This case
shows how life becomes unsafe when rights are denied.

2. What is Amnesty International:

It is a global human rights organisation that reports violations and campaigns for fair treatment of
prisoners worldwide.

3. Government of Saudi Arabia:

Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. The King holds all power, people cannot elect rulers, no
political parties are allowed, media is restricted, and women face many inequalities.

4. Ethnic Massacre in Kosovo:

In Kosovo, Serb leader Milosevic targeted ethnic Albanians. Thousands were killed, families were
destroyed and many were forced to flee. It was a major incident of ethnic violence.

5. What are Rights:

Rights are reasonable claims recognised by society and protected by law. They help people live
with dignity, equality and freedom.

6. Notions of Rights:

Rights develop from what society considers fair. These ideas change over time and are later
protected by laws.

7. When Rights are Infringed:

Rights are violated when authorities misuse power, individuals harm others' freedoms, or laws are
not followed properly.

8. Why We Need Rights in a Democracy:

Rights protect citizens, allow participation in government, prevent majority domination, and stop the
government from misusing power.

9. Characteristics of Fundamental Rights:

They are guaranteed by the Constitution, universal, enforceable by courts, limit government power,
and protect human dignity.

10. Rule of Law:

Rule of Law means no person is above the law. Everyone is treated equally and judged by the
same legal standards.

11. Fundamental Rights in Constitution:

Right to Equality, Right to Freedom, Right against Exploitation, Right to Freedom of Religion,
Cultural and Educational Rights, and Right to Constitutional Remedies.

12. Features of Right to Equality:

Equality before law, no discrimination, equal access to public places, equal opportunity in jobs, and
abolition of untouchability.

13. Why Fundamental Rights Have Special Status:

They protect liberty, prevent misuse of power, promote equality, and are enforceable by courts.

14. Why Untouchability is Punishable:

It violates equality, denies dignity, harms social unity, and causes discrimination. Hence it is
outlawed.

15. Freedom of Speech & Democracy:

It allows people to express opinions, question the government, promote new ideas, and protect
other rights. Democracy cannot function without it.

16. Right to Freedom – Types of Freedoms:

Freedom of speech, peaceful assembly, forming associations, movement, residence, and choice of
profession. These ensure a free and dignified life.
