Question-1: (HOMEWORK-1)
About linear independence we can decide according to the properties below.
A set of two vectors {v 1, v2} is linearly dependent if at least one of the vectors is a
multiple of the other.
The set is linearly independent if and only if neither of the vectors is a multiple of the
other.

Let v 1= 2 , v 2= 5 , and v 3= 1

1 4 2
3 6 0
Find x 1 and x 2 in the linear dependence relation (x 1 v 1+ x2 v 2 + x 3 v 3=0)
among v1, v2, and v3 when x 3= 5
Hint: The variables are ordered always from left to right x1, x2, x3 ,….. xn
To determine if there is a nontrivial solution, you need to solve the following equation.
To find a linear dependence relation among v1, v2, and v3, row reduce the augmented matrix and
write the new system:
Question-2: (HOMEWORK-2)
Let T be the linear transformation whose standard matrix is;
[ ]
1 −4 8 1
A= 0 2 −1 3 ,
0 0 0 5
Does T map R4 onto or one-to-one R3? Describe the reason.
Question-3: (HOMEWORK-3)
When a battery is connected in an electrical circuit, a current flow through the circuit. If the current
passes through a resistor, a drop in voltage occurs. These voltage drops obey Ohm’s law, which states
that,
V = RI,
where V is the voltage drop across the resistor (measured in volts), R is the resistance (measured in
ohms), and I is the current (measured in amperes).
Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law
In a closed path within an electrical circuit, the sum of the voltage drops in any one direction equals
the sum of the voltage sources in the same direction.
Example:
Find the currents in each branch of the given circuit below I1, I2, I3
Note: since we are proceeding around the closed path in a clockwise direction. If the flow
is opposite direction, it is indicated as -I.
