CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rapid growth of information and communication technology (ICT) has brought about
significant changes in various sectors of society, including education. One of the most prominent
technological innovations influencing modern education is the mobile phone. Over the years,
mobile phones have evolved from basic communication devices into sophisticated smartphones
capable of supporting internet access, multimedia functions, educational applications, and online
learning platforms. This transformation has made mobile phones an essential tool for students in
higher institutions of learning.
Globally, mobile phone usage among university students has increased dramatically due to its
convenience, portability, and multifunctional nature. Students now rely on mobile phones to
access academic resources such as e-books, online journals, virtual libraries, and educational
websites. Mobile phones also support collaborative learning through emails, instant messaging,
and academic discussion forums, thereby enhancing interaction between students and lecturers
beyond the traditional classroom setting.
In Nigeria, the adoption of mobile phones among university students has grown rapidly, largely
due to the widespread availability of smartphones and increasing access to mobile internet
services. Nigerian students use mobile phones for various academic activities, including online
research, participation in virtual lectures, submission of assignments, and communication with
peers and lecturers. The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of mobile
phones in sustaining academic activities when physical classroom interactions were restricted.
Lagos State University (LASU), as one of the foremost state-owned universities in Nigeria,
comprises students from diverse academic backgrounds who actively engage with mobile
technology. Mobile phones are commonly used by LASU students to download lecture materials,
access learning management systems, record lectures, and participate in online academic
discussions. These practices suggest that mobile phones have become deeply integrated into the
academic lives of LASU students.
At Lagos State University (LASU), the digital shift is evident in the university’s administrative
and academic operations. Students increasingly rely on mobile devices to interact with the LASU
Integrated Data Centre (LIDC) portal for essential tasks such as course registration, fee
payments, and result checking. Furthermore, the use of instant messaging platforms like
WhatsApp and Telegram has become the unofficial standard for departmental communication,
allowing for the rapid dissemination of lecture schedules and academic materials in PDF and
multimedia formats.
However, despite the numerous academic benefits of mobile phone usage, concerns have been
raised regarding its potential negative impact on students’ academic performance. Excessive
engagement with social media platforms, online entertainment, and non-academic applications
may lead to distraction, reduced concentration, and poor study habits. This mixed impact of
mobile phone usage highlights the need for a balanced and purposeful approach to its use for
academic purposes.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the extent to which LASU students use mobile phones for
academic purposes, the specific academic activities they engage in using mobile phones, and the
challenges associated with such usage. By understanding these factors, the study aims to provide
useful insights that can guide students, educators, and university administrators in maximizing
the academic benefits of mobile phone usage while minimizing its drawbacks.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While mobile phones have become indispensable tools for learning in modern educational
settings, their uncontrolled and excessive use has raised serious concerns among educators,
parents, and academic administrators. Many university students devote a significant portion of
their time to social media, entertainment applications, and other non-academic activities on their
mobile phones, which may negatively affect their academic focus and performance.
In Lagos State University, there is limited empirical evidence documenting the actual pattern of
mobile phone usage among students specifically for academic purposes. It is unclear whether
LASU students predominantly use mobile phones to support their studies or whether non-
academic usage outweighs academic engagement. This lack of documented information makes it
difficult for stakeholders to assess the true academic value of mobile phone usage among
students.
Furthermore, challenges such as high cost of internet data, poor network connectivity, limited
access to institutional online platforms, and lack of formal guidelines on academic mobile phone
usage may hinder effective utilization of mobile phones for learning. These issues create a gap
that this study seeks to address by examining mobile phone usage for academic purposes among
LASU students and identifying the associated benefits and challenges.
While mobile phones offer numerous academic advantages, their uncontrolled use has raised
concerns among educators and parents. Many students spend excessive time on social media
platforms, entertainment applications, and non-academic activities, which may negatively affect
their academic performance. In LASU, there is limited documented evidence on whether
students primarily use mobile phones for academic purposes or non-academic activities.
Additionally, issues such as poor internet connectivity, high cost of data, and lack of institutional
guidance on academic mobile phone usage may limit the effective use of mobile phones for
learning. This study addresses the gap by examining how LASU students use mobile phones for
academic purposes and identifying the challenges they encounter.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine mobile phone usage for academic purposes among
LASU students. The specific objectives are to:
1. Determine the extent to which LASU students use mobile phones for academic purposes.
2. Identify the academic activities for which LASU students use mobile phones.
3. Examine the benefits of mobile phone usage for academic purposes among LASU students.
4. Identify challenges associated with mobile phone usage for academic purposes.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:
1. To what extent do LASU students use mobile phones for academic purposes?
2. What academic activities do LASU students use mobile phones for?
3. What benefits do LASU students derive from using mobile phones for academic purposes?
4. What challenges do LASU students face in using mobile phones for academic purposes?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, lecturers, and university administrators.
Students will gain insight into effective ways of using mobile phones to enhance their academic
performance. Lecturers and university management will benefit from understanding students’
mobile phone usage patterns, which can inform policies and the integration of mobile learning
platforms within the institution. The study will also contribute to existing literature on mobile
phone usage and academic activities in Nigerian universities.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on undergraduate students of Lagos State University (LASU). The study is
limited to examining mobile phone usage for academic purposes and does not extensively cover
non-academic uses of mobile phones.
