Podcast Script: Peer Pressure

Hosts: Aayan Khan and Shoaib Mohammed 9B1

INTRODUCTION

Aayan: Hello and welcome to our podcast. I’m Aayan Khan.

Shoaib: And I’m Shoaib.

Aayan: Today, we’re exploring the topic of peer pressure—a powerful social
force that affects people of all ages, especially teenagers.

Shoaib: In this episode, we’ll define peer pressure, explain its different forms,
look at how it impacts decision-making and mental health, and discuss strategies
for managing it effectively.

DEFINITION OF PEER PRESSURE

Shoaib: Peer pressure refers to the influence exerted by a peer group,

encouraging individuals to change their attitudes, values, or behaviors to conform
to group norms.

Aayan: This influence can be positive, such as motivating someone to study

harder or try out for a school team, or negative, such as encouraging risky
behavior like skipping school or bullying others.

Shoaib: What makes peer pressure so significant is that it often happens subtly,
and individuals may not realize they’re being influenced until after a decision has
been made.

REAL-WORLD ONLINE SCENARIO (NEWS STYLE)

Aayan: Let’s take a look at a real-world example of online peer pressure.

Shoaib: Earlier this year, a 14-year-old student named Sara submitted a

statement to her school’s wellbeing team. She explained that a group chat she
was part of began circulating a dangerous social media challenge involving self-
harm.

Aayan: Members of the group began tagging classmates, pressuring them to

participate, and mocking those who refused. Sara was added to the list and
received multiple private messages urging her to take part.

Shoaib: Rather than staying silent, Sara reported the group chat to a school
counselor and removed herself from the online platform. The school addressed
the issue immediately and implemented digital safety workshops.

Aayan: This case highlights how peer pressure can occur digitally and the
importance of taking action when someone is pressured into doing something
unsafe.

TYPES OF PEER PRESSURE

Shoaib: Peer pressure can take on different forms, and it’s important to
understand them.

Aayan: Direct peer pressure involves someone explicitly telling or urging another
person to engage in a specific behavior. For example, a friend might say, “You
should skip class with us—everyone's doing it.”

Shoaib: Indirect peer pressure is more subtle. It happens when someone feels
the need to behave a certain way simply because it seems like everyone else is
doing it, even if no one says it outright. This could include dressing a certain way
or participating in trends to avoid feeling left out.

IMPACT ON DECISIONS AND MENTAL HEALTH

Aayan: The influence of peer pressure can lead to choices that a person might
not otherwise make. In some cases, it can result in short-term regret; in others, it
can lead to more serious long-term consequences.

Shoaib: It can also affect mental health. Constantly trying to meet the
expectations of a peer group can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and emotional
burnout.

Aayan: Over time, a person may start to lose their sense of identity, making it
harder to make independent, confident choices.

THREE TIPS FOR MANAGING PEER PRESSURE

Shoaib: Here are three practical strategies to handle peer pressure:

Aayan: First, build self-awareness. Know your values and personal boundaries
before you find yourself in a pressured situation.

Shoaib: Second, practice assertive communication. Saying “no” clearly and

respectfully is an important skill.

Aayan: Third, choose your environment wisely. Surround yourself with people
who respect your choices and don’t expect you to compromise who you are.

CONCLUSION

Shoaib: To summarise, peer pressure is a common but complex experience that

can shape our actions and self-image.

Aayan: Recognising it, understanding how it works, and developing healthy ways
to respond are key to making thoughtful, independent decisions.

Shoaib: And remember—choosing what’s right for you is never something to be

ashamed of.

Both: Thank you for listening.
