DEDICATION
The study is wholeheartedly dedicated to our beloved parents, who have been our source of
inspiration and gave us strength when we thought of giving up; our parents were not just a
source of advice but also emotional and financial support.
To our brothers, sisters, relatives, mentor, friends and classmates who shared their words of
advice to finish the study.
And lastly, we dedicate this project to the almighty God, thank you for the guidance, strength,
power of mind, protection and skills and for giving us a healthy life. All of these, we offer you o
God.

INTRODUCTION
CHAPTER ONE
Mukuyu farm is near maximum prison the biggest prison in Zambia.
The farm was established in 1978, under the able leadership of his excellence Dr Kenneth
Kaunda. Mixed farming has always been there but here in Kabwe, it was reintroduced by
prisoners, it is both commercial and subsistence type of farming, the secondary purpose of
creating this farm was that many prisoners will be helped in terms of food supply.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The background of the study, says that they are a lot of animals reared and crops grown, some
for sell some for consumption.

AIM OF THE STUDY
To carry out a research on how animals are kept under mixed farming.
To know the challenges faced by the farmers.
To know the benefits of the type of farming.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Find out the percentage of the products sold and eaten.
The type of food the animals feed on.
The type of crops grown.
The type of labour used.
RATIONALE OF THE STUDY
The rationale of the study states that the products produced in Mukuyu farm are supplied
to
Prisoners in all prison stations.
Kalonga milling plant.
And also some local shops in Kabwe.
The profits which are made are taken to pay tax to the government and help the
prisoners to survive e.g. in Mukobeko maximum prison.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY
THE PROJECT HAS SIX CHAPTERS
Chapter one: introduction. Chapter two: literature review, chapter three; methodology, chapter
four: the findings and interpretation of data, chapter five: the conclusion and recommendation,
chapter six: reference the book, the research used during the research in mukobeko prisons
farm.

CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
According to a search on Google which says that mukuyu farm can be classified as commercial
as well as subsistence: reason being that it sells some of its products and the rest is used by e.g.
the prisoners themselves. They sell their products to help the prisoners in different prison
centers.
PROBLEM STATEMENT OF THE STUDY
These are some of the problems that Mukuyu farm is facing at large.
Lack of funding from the government.
It is not near the CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT (CBD) so it’s hard for it to sell its
products.
Spread of diseases because the farm is near townships.
Most of the products need to be transported countrywide so that they are supplied in
all prison centers.
Theft of stock, crops and cattle is a challenge because the farm is near the main road.

CHAPTER THREEE
METHODOLOGY
This chapter deals with methodology reveling the way information was collected and challenges
faced during the research.
METHODS USED DURING DATA COLLECTION
Only two methods were used to collect data on mixed farming in Mukobeko area which are;
Primary data source: during the research most of the data was collected by interviewing the
officer in charge; superintendent Banda
Secondary data source: also during the research much of the information was conducted
through the library and internet research.
QUESTIONAIRE SCHEDULE OF THE RESEARCH
A questionnaire schedule of the research comprised of structured questions which were used
to obtain the data on how mixed farming is done in Mukuyu farm. Some questions were
prepared to interview the workers of Mukuyu farm.

PROBLEMS FACED DURING RESEARCH
The time given to carry out the project was too short
The distance from Mukobeko to our homes is far.
Some workers refused to be interviewed. We don’t know why.
Some information was not displayed.
Power went during typing.

CHAPTER FOUR
FINDINGS
The finding of the research states that mixed farming is one of the best farming type,
because it involves the rearing of animals and growing of crops on the same piece of
land.
We also found out that they rear cows, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and turkeys. When
it comes to the growing of crops they grow crops like maize, soya beans, potatoes,
cabbage, carrots etc
Some crops are given to the animals as food.

INTERPRETATION OF DATA
At mukuyu farm their products for both animals and crops rely on beef and maize. They
have only employed 6 workers/employees.
4 qualified/skilled.
1 unqualified/ unskilled.
1 semi qualified/ semi skilled.
They produce approximately 450kg of beef per week and 10 bags of crops, but they are
planning to increase the production to 500kg per week and 30 bags of crops. Due to minimum
wage they have reduced the labour work force.

CHALLENGES FACED BY MUKUYU FARM
Package materials prices.
Finances to expand the farm are too low.
Competition; they try by all means to make sure that all the around companies are low
financially.
Have to travel 9 kilometers just to sell their products.
The workers report late therefore slowing down the work.
Theft; a lot of crops and animals are stolen.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
These results show that mixed farming is very important in Kabwe district, and it helps
in paying tax to the government and supply food to the nearby places.
Therefore I would like to urge the government at least to locate more mixed farmers or
to produce loans so that farmers can have a large capital for them to set up their farms,
and to help them get places near the central business. If the government would take or
get this information and use it, you will find that our country is improving in marketing
development, in knowledge as many people in the process will be taught different
things. And also they will be infrastructural development.
