1) Monitors or Video Display Unit (VDU): - Monitors is an output device which is used to display text, images,
and graphics. It comes in different shapes and sizes. Monitors are very similar to televisions. It is also called
softcopy output devices.
The various kinds of monitors are: -
1) CRT: Cathode Ray Tube
2) FPD (Flat Panel Display)
1) CRT: - CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube. This type of monitors uses a large vacuum tube, called CRT. The
CRT monitor is oldest types of computers display device. Vacuum tubes are heavy in weight so cannot
portable easily. Due to vacuum tube produce a lot pf heat so air conditioning was being required. CRT
monitors are relatively inexpensive and reliable.
Advantages: - 1) Less expensive as compared to other display technologies.
Disadvantages: -
1) Heavy in weight so cannot portable easily.
2) More power consumption due to vacuum tube.
2) FPD (Flat Panel Display)
A flat panel display is a type of electronic screen that is thin lightweight and produce high quality images and
graphics. They can consume less power. They are expensive monitors. These are used in calculator, laptop,
video games etc.
Types of Flat Panel Displays
2) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
2) LED (Light Emitting Diodes)
1) LCD: - LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. LCD screen contains a matrix of pixels that display the image on
the screen. It uses liquid crystals to produce a visible image. LCD displays are super thin technology display
screens that are generally used in Laptop, Computers screens, TVs, Cell phones and portable video games.
Advantages: - 1) LCD can be made in large sizes over 60 inches to 150 inches.
2) It is very impact, thin and light CRT displays.
3) Due to low power consumption, small heat emitting during operation.
Disadvantages: -
1) Expensive as compared to CRT.
2) They suffer from a motion blur effect, where the individual pixels are just slightly out of step
with the image on screen.
2) LED: - LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes, different from LCD because LCD uses fluorescent light while
LEDs use light emitting diodes. The fluorescent light in LCD is always behind the screen and in LED diodes can
be placed either behind the screen or around its edges. The difference in lights and in lighting placement has
meant LED thinner than LCDs. It provides greater energy efficiency and clarity and better picture than LCD.
Advantages: - 1) Save energy as compared to LCD as much as 25 %.
2) It is more lighter and thinners than LCD.
3) Longer life as compared to LCD.
4) It offers better and shaper color reproduction as compared to LCD.
Disadvantages: -
1) Expensive as compared to LCD displays.
