Statistics
Statistics deals with the collection, analysis and presentation of data. Data can
come from a survey, an experiment ecc.. Once collected the data you can
analyze it, taking a sample not the entire population.
If the aim is only the sample, you use descriptive statistics (that provides a
detailed summary of the sample), if the aim is population as a hole use
inferential statistics (that makes guess on population in base of the sample).
Descriptive statistics = aims to describe and summarize a data set in a
meaningful way; it only describes data without drawing conclusion on the hole
population.
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY = are for example mean, median and
mode
Mean = the sum of all observations divided for the number of observations
(sum up all the scores and divide for the number of scores)
Median = when the values in a dataset are arranged in ascending order the
median is the central value (if odds sommi e dividi per due I due numeri in
mezzo)
Mode = refers to the value that occurs most frequently in the data set
MEASURES OF DISPERSION = describe how spread out the values in the
data set are
Variance and standard deviation = the average distance between each
data point and the mean. To calculate use this equation.
We use the second one (with the n-1) if the survey doesn’t cover the whole
population, likewise if we have conducted a clinical study, then we also use this
equation to estimate the standard deviation.
Difference between standard deviation and variance? As we now know, the
standard deviation is the quadratic mean of the distance from the mean. The
variance now is the squared standard deviation. (quindi se nel primo c’è la
radice quadrata nel secondo essendo il suo quadro è la stessa formula ma
senza la radice all’inizio)
Range = the difference between max and min value
Interquartile range = represent the middle 50% of the data, is the difference
between q1 and q3, therefore the 25% are smaller of the range and 25% larger
In summary Measures of Central Tendency provide a central point of the
dataset Measures of Dispersion describe how the data is spread around the
set.
Frequency tables = displays how often each distinct value appears in a data
set. Provides a clear and concise … ??
Contingency tables (crosstabs) when we have more variables (if a company
has two factories for example). It is between two categories of variables.
Charts = bar chart ecc…
