Secondary Mathematics: Trigonometry

1. Trigonometric Ratios

Trigonometry studies relationships between angles and sides of triangles. The main ratios are sine
(sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan). In a right triangle: sin(θ) = opposite / hypotenuse cos(θ) =
adjacent / hypotenuse tan(θ) = opposite / adjacent These ratios are fundamental for solving right
triangles.
2. Unit Circle

The unit circle has radius 1 centered at the origin. Any angle θ corresponds to a point (cos θ, sin θ).
This approach extends trigonometry beyond right triangles and allows calculation of exact values
for special angles such as 30°, 45°, and 60°.
3. Trigonometric Identities and Applications

Important identities include: sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ These identities simplify expressions
and solve equations. Applications include physics (waves), engineering, and astronomy.
