TRICK #1

NO NEGATIVE MARKING = ATTEMPT EVERYTHING

The Most Important Strategy That 90% Freshers Don't Use

THE MATH BEHIND GUESSING

4 options per question = 25% chance of correct answer
If you SKIP 15 questions = 0 marks guaranteed
If you GUESS 15 questions = ~3-4 correct = 3-4 FREE marks
After eliminating 2 wrong options = 50% chance = ~7-8 correct!
NEVER leave a question blank. There is literally ZERO downside.

Real Impact on Your Score:

Strategy Questions Left Expected Correct Extra Marks

Skip All (Most students) 15 blank 0 +0

Random Guess (25%) 15 guessed ~4 +4 FREE

Smart Guess (eliminate 2) 15 guessed ~7 +7 FREE

ELIMINATION TECHNIQUE - Turn 25% into 50%+

Step 1: Read all 4 options quickly
Step 2: Remove obviously absurd/extreme values
Step 3: If a number question - check if answer is close to your estimate
Step 4: For verbal - grammar rules can eliminate 1-2 options easily
Step 5: Guess from remaining 2 options = 50% chance!

REMEMBER: 4 extra marks from smart guessing can be the difference between SELECTED and REJECTED.
The cutoff is tight!

TRICK #2

PERCENTAGE SHORTCUTS - 10% Building Block

Method
TCS asks 3-5 percentage questions. Solve each in 15-30 seconds instead of 2 minutes.

Percentage How to Calculate Example (of 600)

10% Divide by 10 60

5% Half of 10% 30

1% Divide by 100 6

20% 10% x 2 120

25% Divide by 4 150

15% 10% + 5% 90

33.33% Divide by 3 200

50% Divide by 2 300

75% 50% + 25% 450

SOLVED EXAMPLE 1: Find 37% of 600

SLOW METHOD: 37/100 x 600 = complex multiplication

FAST METHOD (10% Blocks):

10% of 600 = 60
30% = 60 x 3 = 180
5% = 60 / 2 = 30
2% = 60 / 5 = 12
7% = 30 + 12 = 42
37% = 180 + 42 = 222

Time saved: ~30 seconds per question!

SOLVED EXAMPLE 2: Shirt costs Rs.800, 15% discount. Price?

10% of 800 = 80
5% of 800 = 40
15% discount = 80 + 40 = 120
Final price = 800 - 120 = Rs.680

TCS SMART HIRING 2026-27 | CLASSIC TECHNOLOGY APTITUDE TRICKS | FREE EDITION | [Link]

SOLVED EXAMPLE 3: Price increases 20% then decreases 20%. Net change?
COMMON MISTAKE: Students think net = 0% (WRONG!)

TRICK FORMULA: When same % increase & decrease:

Net change = -(percentage)^2 / 100
= -(20)^2 / 100 = -400/100 = -4%

ANSWER: 4% DECREASE (not zero!)

Verify: 100 -> +20% -> 120 -> -20% -> 96 -> Net = -4%

Fraction-Percentage Table (MEMORIZE!):

Fraction % Fraction % Fraction %

1/2 50% 1/6 16.67% 1/10 10%

1/3 33.33% 1/7 14.28% 1/11 9.09%

1/4 25% 1/8 12.5% 1/12 8.33%

1/5 20% 1/9 11.11% 2/3 66.67%

PRACTICE PROBLEMS (Try before checking answers)

Q1: Find 43% of 700
Q2: Price drops 30% from Rs.1200. New price?
Q3: A number increases by 10% then 10% again. Total % increase?
Q4: 40% of ? = 160
Q5: What % of 250 is 45?

Answers: Q1: 301 | Q2: Rs.840 | Q3: 21% | Q4: 400 | Q5: 18%

TRICK #3

TIME & WORK - The LCM Method

THE single biggest time-saver. Eliminates all fractions. TCS asks 2-4 questions.

THE LCM METHOD - 4 Simple Steps

Step 1: Take LCM of all given days = TOTAL WORK (in units)
Step 2: Each person's SPEED = Total Work / Their Days
Step 3: COMBINED speed = Add all individual speeds
Step 4: TIME together = Total Work / Combined Speed

That's it! NO fractions like 1/10 + 1/15. Pure simple numbers!

SOLVED EXAMPLE 1: A does work in 10 days, B in 15 days. Together?

OLD METHOD (Fractions) LCM METHOD (Fast!)

A's 1 day = 1/10

Total Work = LCM(10,15) = 30
B's 1 day = 1/15
A's speed = 30/10 = 3 units/day
Together = 1/10 + 1/15
B's speed = 30/15 = 2 units/day
= (3+2)/30 = 5/30
Together = 3+2 = 5 units/day
= 1/6
Time = 30/5 = 6 days
Answer: 6 days

Clean numbers! No fractions!

Error prone! Fractions!

SOLVED EXAMPLE 2: A=6 days, B=8 days, C=12 days. Together?

Total Work = LCM(6, 8, 12) = 24 units
A's speed = 24/6 = 4 units/day
B's speed = 24/8 = 3 units/day
C's speed = 24/12 = 2 units/day
Together = 4 + 3 + 2 = 9 units/day
Time = 24/9 = 2 days 16 hours (2 and 2/3 days)

FREE PDF | Paid Version (All 24 Tricks + 200 Problems) @ Rs.49 only | [Link]
Page 7
© Classic Technology | All Rights Reserved | [Link]
TCS SMART HIRING 2026-27 | CLASSIC TECHNOLOGY APTITUDE TRICKS | FREE EDITION | [Link]

SOLVED EXAMPLE 3: A works 2 days alone, then B joins. A=10d, B=15d. Total?
Total Work = LCM(10, 15) = 30 units
A's speed = 3 units/day | B's speed = 2 units/day
A alone for 2 days = 3 x 2 = 6 units done
Remaining = 30 - 6 = 24 units
A+B together = 3 + 2 = 5 units/day
Time for remaining = 24/5 = 4.8 days
TOTAL = 2 + 4.8 = 6.8 days

SOLVED EXAMPLE 4: PIPES & CISTERNS (Same concept!)

Pipe A fills in 12 hrs, Pipe B fills in 18 hrs, Pipe C EMPTIES in 36 hrs.
All three open. How long to fill?

Total capacity = LCM(12, 18, 36) = 36 units

A fills = 36/12 = +3 units/hr
B fills = 36/18 = +2 units/hr
C empties = 36/36 = -1 unit/hr (NEGATIVE!)
Net = 3 + 2 - 1 = 4 units/hr
Time = 36/4 = 9 hours

Quick LCM Reference:

Numbers LCM Numbers LCM

2, 3 6 10, 15 30

3, 4 12 12, 18 36

4, 6 12 15, 20 60

6, 8 24 6, 8, 12 24

8, 12 24 10, 15, 20 60

PRACTICE PROBLEMS
Q1: A=20 days, B=30 days. Together?
Q2: A=15d, B=20d. A works 5 days alone, B joins. Total?
Q3: A+B together=6 days, B alone=10 days. A alone?
Q4: Pipe fills in 20 hrs, Pipe empties in 30 hrs. Both open, fill time?
Q5: A is 3x efficient as B. Together=9 days. B alone?

Answers: Q1: 12 days | Q2: 11 days | Q3: 15 days | Q4: 60 hours | Q5: 36 days

TRICK #4

NUMBER SERIES - Difference Method

TCS asks 3-5 series questions. This method cracks 90% of them instantly.

THE METHOD - 3 Levels of Differences

Step 1: Write differences between consecutive terms (Level 1)
Step 2: If Level 1 is constant -> Add same constant. Done!
Step 3: If not constant -> Find differences of differences (Level 2)
Step 4: If Level 2 is constant -> pattern found!
Step 5: If still not -> check for multiplication, squares, cubes

EXAMPLE 1: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, ?

Level 1 differences: 4, 4, 4, 4 -> CONSTANT!
Next term = 19 + 4 = 23

EXAMPLE 2: 2, 5, 10, 17, 26, ?

Level 1: 3, 5, 7, 9 (not constant)
Level 2: 2, 2, 2 -> CONSTANT!
Next L1 difference = 9 + 2 = 11
Next term = 26 + 11 = 37

EXAMPLE 3: 2, 6, 18, 54, 162, ?

Each term x3 = next (multiplication pattern)
162 x 3 = 486

EXAMPLE 4: 1, 2, 4, 8, 7, 32, 10, ? (Tricky!)

Two interleaved series!
Odd positions: 1, 4, 7, 10 -> +3 pattern
Even positions: 2, 8, 32, ? -> x4 pattern
Next even = 32 x 4 = 128
