Tutorial 4

The document is a tutorial for a Chemical Process Technology course at IITD, focusing on distillation and crude oil processing. It includes questions on ASTM distillation curves, estimation of kerosene cut volume, identification of product streams, and thermal severity in visbreaking processes. Additionally, it discusses the use of steam in distillation, side-stripping columns, pump around units, and temperature limitations for crude oil before distillation.

TUTORIAL 4
1. Consider the ASTM distillation curves given in Figure below for kerosene and diesel
cuts obtained from distillation. Determine whether the separation in the column was
good or bad.

2. (a) Estimate the cut vol% of kerosene from the crude oil boiling point data given
below. (b) Find the volume averaged boiling point of crude oil.
ASTM D86, oF Cumulative Vol%

86 0.0

122 0.5

167 1.7

212 3.3

257 6.0

302 9.1

347 13.0
392 17.7

437 23.4

482 31.4

527 42.1

636 57.1

689 64.9

742 71.9

794 78.4

1023 99.2

3. In the below figure, identify the product streams from the temperature values.
4. A coil visbreaker operates at 475°C for 1 min. How long will it take to achieve the
same thermal severity at 440°C in a soaker visbreaking process? An apparent
Arrhenius activation energy for thermal cracking is given as 45 kcal/mol. ANSWER:
4.3 min

5. Crude oil distillation column:

a. Under what circumstances would you recommend the use of steam in place of
a reboiler at the base of a distillation column? Clearly list the advantages and
disadvantages of the use of steam for crude oil fractionation.
b. Explain why side-stripping columns are used in crude oil fractionation.
c. What is the purpose of pump around units in the crude distillation column?
d. Why crude oil is not heated beyond about 900 oF before injecting it in the
distillation column?
