The water pump can be controlled from the

the physical efforts and makes it more

The next component used is the PIR sensor
which is used to detect the movement of pests near
the plants. When an animal comes near the plant, it
detects the animal’s movement and triggers the
buzzer which shoos the animal away.
There is a high possibility for the buzzer to go off
when the user goes near the plants. In order to
avoid this, we can switch off the PIR sensor using
the Blynk app before doing so.
Lastly, we have integrated Purple LED lights
that provide enough radiation to stimulate plants'
growth in the absence of sunlight.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The Smart Gardening System employs an IoT platform to automate and optimize home gardening tasks, such as watering and pest control. It uses sensors, including soil moisture, humidity, and temperature sensors, connected to an IoT board with the ESP8266 microcontroller for data collection. The system can automatically activate irrigation when soil moisture is low and uses a PIR sensor to detect pests. It also includes an OLED display and IoT cloud integration for remote monitoring and control over the internet. This setup reduces manual effort and enhances convenience for gardeners .

The proposed system addresses pest control by incorporating a PIR sensor that detects the movement of pests, like squirrels and rats, near plants. Upon detection, it activates a buzzer to scare away the animals, thus protecting the plants from damage. This automated response enables efficient pest management without constant human intervention .

Traditional irrigation systems often rely on manual monitoring and operation, making them labor-intensive and less efficient in water usage, sometimes leading to plant dehydration or overwatering. The document outlines an automated system that uses soil moisture sensors to determine watering needs, thereby conserving water and ensuring optimal plant hydration. This system reduces human error, increases reliability, and is time-efficient, addressing the primary shortcomings of conventional systems .

The use of IoT in urban gardening, as applied in the Smart Gardening System, promotes sustainability by optimizing resource use, such as water and energy. IoT devices enhance precision in irrigation, reducing wastage and only using fertilizers or pesticides when necessary based on sensor data. This targeted approach minimizes environmental impact and supports the efficient use of urban spaces for agricultural purposes, potentially reducing food miles and supporting urban biodiversity as well .

The system employs a variety of sensors, such as soil moisture, temperature, and humidity sensors, to collect precise environmental data. This data is then transmitted through the IoT platform (using the ESP8266 microcontroller) for processing and decision-making. For instance, the system uses soil moisture data to determine the irrigation needs of plants, ensuring they receive adequate but not excessive water. Temperature and humidity data help optimize growing conditions, enhancing plant health and growth .

The ESP8266 microcontroller is essential due to its ability to facilitate Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling real-time data transmission and control in an IoT ecosystem. Its low cost and small size make it ideal for embedding in various devices, including sensors in the Smart Gardening System, to automate processes like irrigation and pest alerting. The ESP8266 can function as a stand-alone module or interface with other MCUs, enhancing flexibility in system design .

Potential challenges include connectivity issues due to the dense structure of urban settings, which may affect real-time communication among IoT devices. Additionally, the initial cost and technical complexity of setting up IoT infrastructure may deter users. Adapting to the technology might also be a barrier for some users who are not tech-savvy. Moreover, extreme weather conditions can pose operational challenges to the sensors and electronic components involved .

Purple LED lights in the Smart Gardening System provide artificial lighting that stimulates plant growth, particularly when sunlight is insufficient. The system leverages the specific blue and red frequencies of light, which are critical for photosynthesis, affecting plant growth, leaf expansion, and chloroplast function. Red light influences plant reproductive stages, while blue light supports vegetative growth .

Rooftop gardens contribute environmental benefits such as improved air quality and reduced atmospheric carbon levels, fostering a healthier environment. They also help in cooling buildings, particularly during hot summer days. Societally, these gardens provide recreational space and the possibility for urban agriculture, which can alleviate food demand and offer pesticide-free vegetables, promoting sustainability and enhancing urban living quality .

The Blynk app integration enhances user experience by allowing remote control and monitoring of the gardening system through mobile devices. Users can receive notifications about soil moisture levels and control devices like water pumps via their smartphones. This capability reduces the need for constant physical presence, thereby saving time and increasing convenience for gardeners, especially in urban settings .
