5. In a school, 156-passed Geography or History. 75 students passed both subjects. If 9
more passed Geography as passed History, how many students passed each subject?
6. Draw a Venn diagram of the universal set U containing three sets A, B and C. Given that
𝑛(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ∩ 𝐶) = 3, 𝑛(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 8, 𝑛(𝐴 ∩ 𝐶) = 4, 𝑛(𝐵 ∩ 𝐶) = 5, 𝑛(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ′ 𝐶 ′ ) =
6, 𝑛(𝐴′ 𝐵′ ∩ 𝐶) = 2 and 𝑛(𝐴′ ∩ 𝐵 ∩ 𝐶′) = 4.
Find 𝑛(𝐴), 𝑛(𝐵) and 𝑛(𝐶).
7. In an examination, 156 students took both Mathematics or English. Each student took at
least one the two subjects, 75 took both subjects. Twice as many took English as took
Mathematics,
(a) Illustrate the information in a Venn diagram.
(b) Find the number of students who took only Mathematics.
8. In a class of 60 students, 45 offer Accounting and 20 offer Economics. It is known that 6
offer neither Accounting nor Economics.
How many students offer

(c) What is the probability of selecting a student who offers only one subject.
9. Out of 35 passengers in a bus, (2𝑚 + 1) had both passport and Ghana card. Those who
had passport is twice those who had both cards, those who had Ghana cards is 2 more
than those who had passport. Those with no card is one-third those who had passport.
(a) Illustrate the information in a Venn diagram.
(b) Find the number of passengers who had
(i) both cards;
(ii) only one type of card.
10. A survey conducted on singers at a camp meeting indicated that 21 like Gospel, (2𝑥² −
4) like only gospel and (5𝑥 + 2) like only classical music. The number who like only
one type of music is 31.
(a) Illustrate the information in a Venn diagram.
(b) Find the number of singers who
(i) like both music;
(ii) like classical music;
(iii)were in the camp.
11. In a class of 32 students, (𝑥²) like football and (4𝑥 − 1) like volleyball. Those who like
both games are a quarter the number who like football and those who like none of the
games are one-third those who like volleyball
(a) Illustrate the information in a Venn diagram.

(i) both games; (ii) only volleyball.
12. In a class of (2𝑥² − 7) students, 35 like Science, 27 like only English Language, (2𝑥 +
1) like both subjects and the number of students who did not like any of the two subjects
is 10 less than those who like both subjects.

13. Out of (𝑥 2 + 6) students in a class, (3𝑥) speak French, (4𝑥 + 1) speak English and the
number who speak both languages are two-thirds those who speak French whiles 11
cannot speak any of the two languages.
(i) Illustrate the data in a Venn diagram.
(ii) Find the number of students
(a) in the class;
(b) who speak only one language.
14. In a class, the number of students studying French or History is 40. Those who study both
subjects are 20, the number of students who study French only is 10 more than the
number who study History only. Find the number of students who study
(i) French; (ii) History.
15. In an examination of 44 candidates, 𝑥 candidates took Geography and 3𝑥 took Physics.
Those who took both papers is one-third those who took Geography.
(a) Illustrate the data in a Venn diagram.

16. A certain village has 1200 people, 45% of the people are public servants and 70% are
farmers. Each person is in at least one of these jobs. Find the number of people who are

18. In a certain class, 12 students study History, 13 study Government and 15 study Akan.
Each student in the class studies at least one of the three subjects, 6 students study two of
the three subjects and 3 students studies all three subjects. Find
(a) the number of students who are in the class;
(b) those who study only one subject.
19. A recent survey of 40 students revealed that the number of students studying one or more
of the three subjects Biology, Physics and Chemistry is as follows: Biology = 22, Biology
and Physics = 5, Biology and (d) Chemistry = 8, Physics and Chemistry = 6, Biology,
Physics and Chemistry = 4 . If the number of students who study Physics as their only
subject is the same as those who study Chemistry as their only subject. Find the number
of students who study
(a) only Physics;
(b) only one subject;
(c) Physics.
20. In one particular night, 60 people went to a cinema hall. It was found that 40 liked
Chinese film, 30 liked Indian film and 20 liked American film. 2 liked all the films and 5
didn't like any of the films. Find how many people liked
(a) exactly two of the films;
(b) only one of the films.
21. In an examination of 1000 students who sat for Geography, Economics and Government.
All passed at least one of the three subjects. 600 passed Geography, 500 passed
Economics and 290 Passed Government, 175 passed both Geography and Economics,
155 passed both Geography and Government and 120 passed both Economics and
Government; How many passed
(a) all three subjects;
(b) exactly two subjects;
(c) exactly one subject.
22. In a certain science class, 12 students study Physics, 16 studies Biology and 21 studies
Chemistry. Only three study all three subjects, 5 study Physics and Biology, 8 study
Physics and Chemistry, and 15 study exactly two subjects. How many students were in
the class?
23. A group of 22 travelers were each required obtaining a passport, health certificate and a
convertible currency. 12 people had the passport, 14 had the health certificate and 11 had
the convertible currency. 6 had both passports and currency, 6 had passports and health
certificates and 7 had health certificates and currency. Each traveler had at least one of
the three requirements.
(a) Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate the given information.
(b) Find the number of travelers who had
(i) all the three requirements;
(ii) exactly two requirements;
