CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Microfinance has emerged as a powerful tool for promoting women’s
empowerment, especially in developing countries where many women face
financial exclusion. It refers to the provision of small loans, savings, insurance,
and other financial services to low-income individuals who lack access to
traditional banking. Since women often have limited access to property, credit,
and formal employment, microfinance institutions (MFIs) specifically target
women to improve their economic and social status.
Women’s empowerment involves increasing women’s ability to make strategic
life choices, gain access to resources, and participate fully in economic and social
activities. Microfinance contributes to this by giving women financial resources
that can be used to start small businesses, support household needs, and build
savings. Access to credit allows women to become financially independent and
reduces their dependence on others for money.
In many communities, microfinance programs also provide training, financial
literacy, and group support systems. These services help women develop skills,
confidence, and knowledge to manage their finances and enterprises effectively.
Group lending models, where women support and monitor each other, also
promote solidarity and collective empowerment.
Moreover, microfinance has social impacts beyond income generation. When
women earn and manage money, their decision-making power within the
household often increases. They are more likely to invest in children’s education,
health, and nutrition, which benefits the entire family and community. This shift
can gradually change traditional gender roles and improve women’s status in
society.
Despite its benefits, microfinance is not a complete solution to gender inequality,
but it remains an important strategy for empowerment. When combined with
education, policy support, and social awareness, microfinance can play a
significant role in improving women’s confidence, autonomy, and quality of life.
Therefore, understanding its role is essential for promoting inclusive and
sustainable development
