This activity will challenge you to analyse a real-world example of how past
forestry laws impacted forest management practices.

Step 1: Choose a Case Study

• Start by researching historical periods where forestry laws significantly


changed forest management.

Some possibilities include:


o Medieval forest laws in Europe (focus on hunting rights vs. community use),
o The rise of sustainable forestry practices in the 18th and 19th centuries
(Germany's Prussian forest service is a good example),
o The establishment of National Forests in the United States (balancing
conservation and economic development) or any other of your choice.

Step 2: Research and Analyse

• Once you've chosen a case study, delve deeper! Look for reliable sources like
academic journals, historical documents, or government websites.

Focus on answering these questions:

i. What were the key forestry laws or regulations implemented during this
period?
ii. What were the main goals or objectives of these laws?
iii. How did these laws impact forest management practices on the ground?
Were there specific regulations on logging, grazing, or other activities?
iv. What were the positive and negative consequences of these laws? Did
they achieve their intended goals?
v. Were there any unintended consequences for the forest ecosystem or
local communities?

Step 3: Analyse the Source

Remember to critically evaluate your sources. Consider the author's perspective


and potential biases. Look for information from multiple sources to get a well-
rounded picture.

Step 4: Present Your Findings

There are several ways to present your analysis. You could write a short report
