Question 2
A short bar magnet of magnetic moment M = 0.32 J/T is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.15 T. If the bar is free to rotate in the
plane of the field, which orientation would correspond to its (i) stable and (ii) unstable equilibrium? What is the potential energy of
the magnet in each case?

OR

If two magnets having magnetic moments M and M√3 are joined to form a cross (i.e. X). The combination is suspended freely in a
uniform magnetic field. In equilibrium position, the magnet having magnetic moment M makes an angle θ with the field. Calculate
the value of θ.

The magnetic field of a beam emerging from a fitter facing a floodlight is given by

The wire shown in the figure carries a current of 10 A. Determine the magnitude of magnetic field
induction at the centre O. Given the radius of bent coil is 3 cm.

A sphere S1 of radius r1 encloses a net charge Q. If there is another concentric sphere S 2 of radius r2 (r2 > r1) enclosing charge 2Q,
find the ratio of the electric flux through S1 and S2. How will the electric flux through sphere S1 change, if a medium of dielectric
constant K is introduced in the space inside S1 in place of air?

(a) With reference to photoelectric effect, plot a labelled graph of stopping potential (V s) versus frequency (f) of the incident
radiation.
(b) State how will you use this graph to determine the value of Planck's constant.

(a) Define mutual inductance and write its SI unit.
(b) Two circular loops, one of small radius r and other of larger radius R, such that R >> r, are placed coaxially with centres
coinciding. Obtain the mutual inductance of the arrangement.

State Lenz's law. Explain, by giving examples that Lenz's law is a consequence of conservation of energy.

Net capacitance of three identical capacitors in series is 1 μF. What will be their net capacitance , if connected in parallel? Find the
ratio of energy stored in these two configurations, if they are both connected to the same source.

at a distance of 1.2 cm away from the objective for the normal adjustment. Determine the angular magnification and length of
microscope tube.

In a H-atom, an electron jumps from the first excited state to the ground state, and a photon is emitted. This photon is incident on a
metal surface having a work function of 2eV. Calculate the stopping potential of the electron emitted from the metal surface.

Question 15
In a meter bridge circuit, resistance in the left gap is 4 and an unknown resistance R is in
the right hand gap as shown in Figure. The null point is found to be 40 cm from the left end
of the wire.
(a) Calculate the value of the unknown resistance R.
(b) What change will you make in R to bring the null point to the midpoint of the wire AB?

An electron and a proton are moving along the +X axis. If an external magnetic field B=0.314T is applied along -Z axis:

Question 18
(i) Figure below shows a capacitor C, an inductor L and a resistor R connected in series to an AC
supply of 220 V.
Calculate
a. the resonant frequency of the given L-C-R circuit.
b. current flowing through the circuit.
c. average power consumed by the circuit.
(ii) In a series L-C-R circuit, what is the phase difference between VL and VC , where VL is the
potential difference across the inductor and V C is the potential difference across the capacitor?
OR
(i) Find the value of the phase difference between the current and the voltage in the series L-C-R
circuit shown below. Which one leads in phase, current or voltage?
(ii) Without making any other change, find the value of the additional capacitor C', to be connected
in parallel with the capacitor C, in order to make the power factor of the circuit unity.

Question 19
(a) Define a wavefront. How is it different from a ray?
(b) Using Huygens’s construction of secondary wavelets draw a diagram showing the passage of a plane wavefront from a denser
to a rarer medium. Using it verify Snell’s law.
(c) In a double slit experiment using light of wavelength 600nm and the angular width of the fringe formed on a distant screen is
0.1°. Find the spacing between the two slits. (d) Write two differences between interference pattern and diffraction pattern.
OR
(i) Trace the path of a ray of light showing refraction through a triangular prism and hence obtain an
expression for angle of deviation (δ) in terms of A, i and e, where symbols have their usual meanings.
Draw a graph showing the variation of angle of deviation with the angle of incidence.
(ii) In the figure, a ray of light is incident on a transparent liquid contained in a thin glass box at an
angle of 45 with its one face. The emergent ray passes along the face AB. Find the refractive index of
the liquid.

Question 20
State Biot-Savart's law expressing it in the vector form. Use it to obtain the expression for the magnetic field at an axial point
distance d from the centre of a circular coil of radius a carrying current I. Also, find the ratio of the magnitudes of the magnetic field
of this coil at the centre and at an axial point for which d=a√3.
