Tutorial9 PYL1002

This document is a tutorial on Waves and Oscillations, focusing on the analysis of a stretched string clamped at both ends. It includes problems related to energy of oscillations, time period calculations, Fourier series derivations for different functions, and the transformation of a square wave's Fourier series. The tutorial emphasizes the mathematical approaches to understanding wave behavior in physical systems.

Tutorial 9, PYL1002, Waves and Oscillations (R.

Marathe, Physics Department, IITD)

1. Consider a stretched string of length L that is clamped at both ends and has a tension
T , the string is pulled in the vertical direction by amount h and then released (see the
figure below).

Find the energy of the subsequent oscillations. Find the time period for the shape in
figure to reappear.

2. For a string of length L fixed at both ends the general solution for a mode “l” is given
lπx
by yl (x, t) = sin L (Al cos(ωl t) + Bl sin(ωl t)). Find the Fourier series for the motion
of the string if y(x, 0) = Ax(L − x); ∂y

∂t t=0
= 0.

3. Repeat the Fourier analysis as done in problem 2 for problem 1.

4. Find the Fourier series for f (x) = exp(x), − 1 < x < 1. Try plotting it for different
number of terms in the series.

5. Consider a square wave given by

(
−1, if − L/2 ≤ x < 0
f (x) =
1, if 0 ≤ x < L/2

We found that the Fourier series contains only the sine terms. Can this series be
express as a cosine series? Find out how and hence, find the new coefficients.
