Exercises Compaction

The document presents data from compaction tests on soil with varying water content, identifying the optimum moisture content as 13.8% with a maximum dry unit weight of 17.24 KN/m3. It also calculates zero-air void dry densities for each water content and discusses the density index of a sand deposit with a void percentage of 35%, concluding that the soil is not suitable for construction. The specific gravity of the soil and sand particles is provided, along with the necessary calculations for determining densities.

If the specific gravity of the soil is 2.6 and volume of the mould is 103cm3
a) Among above water contents which one can be optimum water content?
Determine its corresponding dry unit weight and its corresponding curve.

b) If the soil were to contain a constant %, A, of voids containing air, the relationship between
the dry unit weight of the soil and moisture content is as follows:

Qeuestion-2

The in situ percentage voids of a sand deposit is 35%. For determining the density index, dried sand
from stratum was first filled loosely in a 1000cm3 mould and was then vibrated to give a maximum
density. The loose dry mass in the mould was 1620g and the dense dry mass at maximum compaction
was found to be 2000g. Determine the density index if the specific gravity of sand particles is 2.65.
Predict if the soil is acceptable for construction. /10mrks
