29 Read the passage given below and answer the followingquestions :
In a reaction, the rates of disappearance of different reactants or rates of formation of different products
may not be cqual but rate of reaction át any instant of time has the same value expressed in terms of any
reactant or product. Further, the rate of reactionmay not depend upon the stoichiometric coefficients of
the balanced chemical [Link] exact powers of molar concentrations of reactants on which rate
epends are foundexperimentally and expressed in terms of order of reaction. Each reaction has a
Character1stic rate constant depends upon temperature. The units of the rate constant depend upon the order
of reaction.

The following questions are multiple choice questions. Choose the most appropriate answer:
(1) The rate constant of a reaction is found to be 3x10 mol²L'sec!.The order of the reaction is

30 Read the passage given below and ansSwer thefollowing questions: 4

Aldehydes and ketones are reduced to primary and secondary alcohols respectively by NaBH4 or LiAlH4
as well as catalytic hydrogenation. The carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketones is reduced to >CH2,
group on treatment with Zn-Hg and conc. HCI (Clemmensen reduction) or with hydrazine followed by
NaOH or KOH in highly boiling solvent such as ethylene glycol(Wolff-Kishner reduction).
Aldehydes differ from ketones in their oxidation reactions. Aldehydes are easily oxidised to carboxylic
acids on treatment with HNO, KMnO4, K,CrO, etc. Even mild oxidising agents mainly Tollens' reagent
and Fehling's solution also oxidise aldehydes.
Ketones are generally oxidised under vigorous conditions i.e, strong oxidising agents and at elevated
temperatures, to give mixtureof carboxylic acids having lesser number ofC-atoms than the parent ketone.
The following questions are multiple choice questions. Choose the most appropriate answer :
ü) Which of the following cannot be made by reduction of ketone or aldehyde with NaBH+ in methanol?
(a) 1-Butanol (b) 2-Butanol (c) 2-Methyl-1-propanol (d) 2-Methyl-2-propanol
(ii)The carbonylcompound producing anoptically active product by reaction with LiAlH, is
(a)propanone (b) butanone (c) 3-pentanone (d) benzophenone.
(i1) Asubstance CaHo0(X) yields on oxidation a compound C4HsO which gives an oxime and a
positive iodoform test. The substance X on treatment with conc. H¿SO gives QHg The structure of the
compound (X) is
(a)CH;CH,CH,CH,H (b) CH,CH(OH)CH,CH;
(c) (CHg0H (d) CH;CH,-0-CHCH,.

(iv) Inthe oxidation of CH3COCH;CH, by acidified K2Cr207, the products are

(a) CH;COOH and CH;CH;COOH
(b) CH:(CH)2-C0OH and CH;CH,C0OH
(c) CH3CH2CH2COOH + HCOOH
(d) None of these
